On her third record, EVERYONE IS CRYING OUT TO ME, BEWARE, Ukraine-born Brooklyn-ite Alina Simone finds haunting (and obscure) inspiration in Russian punk-folk-poet-suicide Yanka Dyagileva. In her brief life (she died in 1991), Dyagileva recorded 29 songs, mostly traded among fans, and earned well-deserved comparisons to Patti Smith. Simone's interpretations of Dyagileva's compositions quaver with wailing emotion and bear the mark of a songwriter crying out to her fallen muse. It's a left turn for the young talent, but a rapturous diversion.

3.5 stars out of 5 -- Standout 'Half My Kingdom' preserves the original acoustic guitar but trots out bluesy electric fuzz and brass. It's a strange, hypnotic celebration of a defiant soul.
