  A Don't Miss Sci-Fi Film from 1997 - FANTASTIC

Event Horizon was written by Philip Eisner. The film came from the directing skills of Paul W Anderson who was also responsible for Resident Evil and Alien-VS- Predator.

Starring Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne, we find ourselves swept into this space adventure with awe and wonder. Yet Fear is always present.

We find that the heart stopping moments close to the end Captain Miller decides to blow the ship is tremendously enjoyable and tense. You may become mesmerized if watched alone at night with all the lights off where you can properly get swept up in it's claustrophobic atmosphere. We learn that the ship has brought back evil from another dimension. Dr. Weir is continually haunted by his dead wife (Holley Chant) who committed suicide years earlier.

Set in the year 2047 the story concerns the sudden reappearance of a prototype spaceship The Event Horizon which vanished on it's maiden voyage seven years previously. A salvage ship called The Lewis And Clark is sent out to investigate and brings along Dr William Weir (Sam Neil), a physics expert originally responsible for the ship's creation. They dock with the Horizon but find no signs of life and as they set about making repairs, the crew begins to experience hallucinations and sense that they are not totally alone.

Event Horizon was initially unfairly dismissed by mainstream movie critics as a cross between Alien and Hell-Raiser. In my opinion this film will eventually be ranked among the classics.

This movie works on your own sense of unease and seems to culminate on the crew's growing sense of anxiety and paranoia. There is no definitive explanation given for what they are experiencing. Another Dimension may exist within the workings of this space ship but are only left to wonder whether we are actually parked on the edge of hell itself.

The Lewis and Clark space ship was modeled after the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

As Sam Neill (Dr. Weir) says at the end, "You'll never need eyes to see again where we are going."

5/5 for perfection and scariness. The double set is well worth the extra disc.

This is the only movie that has ever truly scared me. I usually laugh at wannabe horror films, but this one gets me every time. I couldn't pass it up at such a great price!

Event Horizon was a great movie. After all these years it still gives me chills. This is a movie you really shouldn't watch in the dark alone.

One of the best horror films that backs the idea behind the Gothic horror. Its symbolism and use of questions many do not dare ask on the unknown of the spiritual realm. The films well balanced use of various elements to set a gloomy mood of helplessness and trapped. I give it an A+

I have been waiting for this to come out in Special Edition before I bought it and I wasn't disapointed. This movie is just as good as it was when I was a teen and the extra features really fleshed out the discs. Very glad I picked this up.

  Creepy as Hell. Pun intended.
Review created: 06/12/09

The atmosphere is creepy. If that doesn't get to you within the first few minutes of the movie, the idea behind the "haunting" will. First off, the crew are stuck on a space ship in the middle of a vacuum. Claustrophobia, anyone? And that space ship is pretty frikkin' scary looking from the inside and the outside. And then you have the videos that show the crew doing God knows what to each other and themselves.

Then there's the whole idea behind the haunting. The ship supposedly dove into a dimension outside the known universe, called "Hell" in the movie, though what Hell really is will vary from religion to religion, but that's not the point. The point is that this dimension is a dimension of "pure chaos, pure evil," a dimension with such a powerful presence that it causes the crew to mutilate each other and do the most deplorable stuff to one another and themselves.

Basically, it's like the Blue Dolphin Hotel Room 1408 floating in space.

And like Alma Wade in F.E.A.R., the presence is constantly felt. It may not be totally known to the viewer (or the characters) in the beginning, but from the intro, you can already tell there's something wrong here, there's something "evil" onboard. But just as is all things supernatural, you can never know what "it" really is and where it came from.

Compared to recent slasher "horror" films of today like The Hills Have Eyes, Hostel, the Saw Series, etc. that manage to do little more than gross the crap out of you, Event Horizon crawls under your skin akin to how Silent Hill affected many young teens and even some grown men when it first came out. It's the atmosphere. It just chokes the hell out of you. I personally couldn't imagine actually BEING in the position that the crew were in. And I feel particularly sad for the guy that got pulled into that extra-dimensional space. I mean, heck, he came out catatonic.

This movie has undergone a lot of criticism and does shine in many areas. Event Horizon was my the first action space horror thriller that I had seen and was very shocked at the gruesome entrails. If aliens, guts, and mysterious plots is your thing, get ready for a blast.
