Creepy as Hell. Pun intended.

The atmosphere is creepy. If that doesn't get to you within the first few minutes of the movie, the idea behind the "haunting" will. First off, the crew are stuck on a space ship in the middle of a vacuum. Claustrophobia, anyone? And that space ship is pretty frikkin' scary looking from the inside and the outside. And then you have the videos that show the crew doing God knows what to each other and themselves.
Then there's the whole idea behind the haunting. The ship supposedly dove into a dimension outside the known universe, called "Hell" in the movie, though what Hell really is will vary from religion to religion, but that's not the point. The point is that this dimension is a dimension of "pure chaos, pure evil," a dimension with such a powerful presence that it causes the crew to mutilate each other and do the most deplorable stuff to one another and themselves.
Basically, it's like the Blue Dolphin Hotel Room 1408 floating in space.
And like Alma Wade in F.E.A.R., the presence is constantly felt. It may not be totally known to the viewer (or the characters) in the beginning, but from the intro, you can already tell there's something wrong here, there's something "evil" onboard. But just as is all things supernatural, you can never know what "it" really is and where it came from.
Compared to recent slasher "horror" films of today like The Hills Have Eyes, Hostel, the Saw Series, etc. that manage to do little more than gross the crap out of you, Event Horizon crawls under your skin akin to how Silent Hill affected many young teens and even some grown men when it first came out. It's the atmosphere. It just chokes the hell out of you. I personally couldn't imagine actually BEING in the position that the crew were in. And I feel particularly sad for the guy that got pulled into that extra-dimensional space. I mean, heck, he came out catatonic.
