EUROTRIP

If the people who put together those hilarious Marx Bros. movies in the thirties and forties were around today, this is what would result: Music appropos to the time, background sight gags that would do the creators of "Top Secret" credit. A plausible plot (Normal upper middle class teen-agers take a trip to Europe prior to college ----hormones running, if not amok, then rampant), unlikely scenarios made plausible by outstanding directing, and a cast that you really, really, like.
Scene after scene after scene which lead to laughs that give life to the expression "Stitch-bustingly-funny". If you've just had abdominal surgery, do not watch this for at least six weeks. The song "Scotty doesn't Know" has as catchable a tune as anything Gerswhin ever wrote. The band is as gross-looking as the music is good. Michelle's problem in getting treated as a gal instead of a guy is played for good laughs. She is very pretty without being obnoxiously so. Eugene Levy is there playing his role (as he did so well in American Pie) as a suburban father; nicely done. The hoot involved with Vinny Jones as the English soccer hooligan shoulda got some sort of Oscar nomination, but I don't think there is (yet) a category for it, and if there were, I'm not sure what it would be called. The scene at the nude beach is just slightly uncomfortable. The side trip to Bratislava and rate-of-exchange joke rivals the waiting-in-line-to-see-the-Louvre/Mime battle in number of belly laughs guaranteed to rip out unsuspecting stitches mentioned above.
The main thing going for this movie is that while the characters are different they are all people you would like. And if you were/are young once, you may well have had similar wishes/hopes/fantasies. This is one of only three movies made since 1980 worth watching--in its entirety--three straight times back-to-back-to-back.
On the DVD the extras are an enhancement to the entire experience as opposed to the detraction they too often are. I sure hope this crew (writers/directors/producers, and casting agent) get to work together on another project.
