Recording information: Atelier Infortecture, Kyoto, Japan (1980-1999).
Editor: Archie Patterson.
Since 1973, Eurock magazine (also a mail-order distributor of recordings) has covered progressive rock music of the most cerebral sort, growing to also encompass some experimental music, contemporary composition, and new age. This CD-ROM contains the text of every issue of Eurock -- all 45 of them, plus two anniversary specials and the 2000 issue. (Aside from the 2000 issue, every one was published between 1973 and 1993.) There are also video clips of live performances by Amon Duul II and Popol Vuh on German TV, and a 1990s Japanese concert montage by Urban Sax. To round out the multimedia components, there are also about 40 minutes of music by Hiro Kawahara, recorded between 1980 and 1999. It's the text part of the CD-ROM that will be most valuable for aficionados of the music Eurock covers, containing as it does a massive amount of information on hundreds of artists that are largely unknown to the mainstream, especially in the United States, since most of the musicians are from abroad. An index quickly allows the user to navigate to individual issues and all articles and discographies on hundreds of artists. The text only appears on the screen one column wide, which does make it harder to read in this format than it did as part of a print magazine, and might limit its appeal to serious researchers and especially rabid fans. For that crowd, though, it's undoubtedly the largest such archive of this kind of material in one place. ~ Richie Unterberger
