Synopsis
In the spirit of the absurdist literary games of the French avant-garde Oulipo movement, and specifically owing a debt to George Perec's lipogrammatic A VOID (a novel written without using the letter "e"), Christian Bok has written a series of whimsical prose poems while only allowing himself one vowel per poem. ("Hot to trot, two blonds who smooch now romp on cold wood floors for crowds of morons, most of whom hoot or howl: whoop, whoop.") The results are silly, rhythmic, incantatory, surprisingly beautiful, and often very funny. This book was nominated for a 2002 Canadian Griffin Poetry Prize.

Industry Reviews
"[T]he real beauty here is the book reads not as exhausting literary calisthenics done under duress but as an exhaustively practiced sequence of maneuvers performed with flair."
Rain Taxi Review of Books - Doug Nufer

"[T]he coolest book of the new millennium is Christian Boek's EUNOIA Dedicated 'for the new/ennui in you,' this book is hip, smart, knowing, self-possessed, cocky. Boek struts his stuff insouciantly, self-reflexively, reveling in his zealous cleverness as he flicks his cigarette ash on the floor...This is a stunning performance, a tour de force seven years in the making. It is refreshing to encounter a book unafraid of and equal to its own bold and brilliant wagers."
Chicago Tribune Books - Maureen McLane (02/10/2002)

"Bök's poem, which was intended to suggest the output of an selfless algorithm, actually resembles a computer program; the strictness of its guidelines approach that of a low-level, "forgiving" language (like Javascript), and its recycling of themes is not unlike the recycled functions of object-oriented languages like Java and C++, in which the same code can be used for different ends. It is also one of our most passionate, inventive, and counter-intuitive responses to the cultural shifts that digital technology have set in motion. Whereas many artists are moving toward randomization, variability, collaboration, and the cult of infinite possibility, Bök spent seven years pursuing an elegant solution to a simple linguistic problem. He has produced a work that occupies a freakish yet masterful position in the development of twenty-first century literature."
Boston Review - Brian Kim Stefans

"What at first seems like a game turns out to be a means of unlocking a kind of hidden nature of the English language: the vowels, it turns out, each have their own moods and environments revealed by their repeated use....The book is jaw-droppingly powerful, a mythology of sound." (starred review)
