Cowley investigates traditional Amharic Biblical commentary in the context of its historical development. He relates the Amharic work to similar Greek, Syrian, Arabic, and Geez material and to Jewish commentary as well. This study--a companion to Cowley's book The Traditional Interpretation of the Apocalypse of St. John in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (CUP 1983)--concludes that Ethiopian commentaries have an essential continuity with the church of Antioch and have been molded into their present form by Ethiopian scholars.
