A Ground-Breaking Film in Terms of Story and Directing

Eternal Sunshine is one of those movies that is so quirky and so original that it will probably turn off just as many people as it delights, but the ones who like it will really love it and appreciate it most likely on an unusual level. This film stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. The Script was penned by famed screenwriter Charlie Kaufman with help from the director of the film Michel Gondry. Together these two make a great team. Kaufman, the writer of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, has a very unique psychological style that figuratively and literally gets into people's heads and really messes with the lines of reality.
The premise of this film is that a couple Joel (Carrey) and Clementine (Winslet) break up and decide to erase each other from their minds literally by using a new method employed by a company that's learned how to target specific memories (i.e. people, places, and events). Clementine does the procedure first, and when Joel finds out he decides to do it to her too out of spite. However, halfway thru the procedure he decides that he wants to call it off. The only problem is he's unconscious and unable to tell the people doing the procedure. Thus, a good majority of the movie takes place in his head trying to hide some of his memories of Clementine in other memories.
This film is so original and inventive and weaves a sweet little romantic comedy between the lines of all the craziness. If you absolutely love this film or the work of Director Michel Gondry, then this 2 Disc version of the film is the only one to own, even though the extras on the 2nd Disc only amount to about an hour total. The Anatomy of a Scene really shows how Gondry almost always opts for practical effects over CGI, though you'd swear the end result was CGI in almost every instance. The interviews with Gondry and Kate are very cool too. Otherwise, if you're just trying out the film for the first time, you may prefer to try the one disc, as it is the same as the first disc in this 2 Disc set.
