REMOVING MEMORIES OF SOMEONE... WOULD YOU?
Review created: 01/05/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Features Actors:Elijah Wood,Jim Carrey,Kate Winslet,Kirsten Dunst & Tom Wilkinson
Rating: R
Running Time: 108 min.
If you could willingly have the memory of someone removed from your consciousness, would you?

The film tells the story of Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet), two people who casually met, fell in love, and drifted apart. Some time after they've separated, Joel finds out that Clementine visited a local psychiatrist (Tom Wilkinson) and had her memory of their entire relationship erased. Anger, pseudo-revenge, and desperation push him to seek out the same doctor and have the procedure to erase his memories of her as well. Three technicians (Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, and Elijah Wood) visit Joel's apartment and work through the night to remove the memories of Clementine from an unconscious Joel's mind. The remaining bulk of the movie actually takes place in Joel's mind as he suddenly decides he doesn't want to forget Clementine. Unable to wake up, he struggles through literal incarnations of his subconscious realities, his dream worlds, and his memories to hide remnants of Clementine where the technicians can't find them.Sound complicated? While it becomes slightly difficult to follow as the movie pulses along, it steadily becomes clear what's happening inside of Joel's mind. Patience is required as the linear timeline of his memories eventually comes into focus (here's a hint -- keep your eye on Clementine's hair color to track the timeline of their relationship history). Those with a keen mind, an attention to detail, and the desire to unravel character arc mysteries are almost sure to fall in love with 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.'

Would recommend to rent or buy.Hope this helps you decide. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Please click YES at the bottom. :)

  Spectacularly Moving

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an honest (albeit surreal) depiction of how our memories influence our choices and our hearts.

Jim Carrey's portrayal of Joel is his career's best on-screen performance, with moving sincerity and heart-breaking frustration at the predicament he finds himself in. His journey carries us through the bitterness of loss and rejection, to the desire to remember what made a part of our past worth experiencing.

Kate Winslet is electrifying as the quirky and impulsive Clementine, stepping away from her usual traditional roles and embracing the more weirdly wonderful side of being a woman. Her experiences resonate deeply with anyone who's ever fumbled through the awkward world of dating.

Visually magnificent, thought-provoking and deeply emotional, this film is one that you won't soon forget.

I love everything about this movie. Who wouldn't want the option of erasing all the bad memories that we have, or forgetting that love we just couldn't hold on to? Jim Carrey is at his best, Kate Winslet is beautiful as always. It takes a few viewings to wrap your brain around the whole premise but its worth it. Also if you have a DTS capable sound system this DVD has that option and it adds to the whole experience that is Spotless Mind.

A Ground-Breaking Film in Terms of Story and Directing

Eternal Sunshine is one of those movies that is so quirky and so original that it will probably turn off just as many people as it delights, but the ones who like it will really love it and appreciate it most likely on an unusual level. This film stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. The Script was penned by famed screenwriter Charlie Kaufman with help from the director of the film Michel Gondry. Together these two make a great team. Kaufman, the writer of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, has a very unique psychological style that figuratively and literally gets into people's heads and really messes with the lines of reality.

The premise of this film is that a couple Joel (Carrey) and Clementine (Winslet) break up and decide to erase each other from their minds literally by using a new method employed by a company that's learned how to target specific memories (i.e. people, places, and events). Clementine does the procedure first, and when Joel finds out he decides to do it to her too out of spite. However, halfway thru the procedure he decides that he wants to call it off. The only problem is he's unconscious and unable to tell the people doing the procedure. Thus, a good majority of the movie takes place in his head trying to hide some of his memories of Clementine in other memories.

This film is so original and inventive and weaves a sweet little romantic comedy between the lines of all the craziness. If you absolutely love this film or the work of Director Michel Gondry, then this 2 Disc version of the film is the only one to own, even though the extras on the 2nd Disc only amount to about an hour total. The Anatomy of a Scene really shows how Gondry almost always opts for practical effects over CGI, though you'd swear the end result was CGI in almost every instance. The interviews with Gondry and Kate are very cool too. Otherwise, if you're just trying out the film for the first time, you may prefer to try the one disc, as it is the same as the first disc in this 2 Disc set.

A cute and quirky joy ride

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet star as a pair of mismatched lovers who each decide to have the other erased from their memories after an explosive break-up. The story of their arguments, petty fights, their quirky games and their lost love is told through Joel (Carrey) as he goes through the memory erasing procedure. A simply complex (and touchingly honest)love story if ever there was one. I could watch this movie over and over and see something new each and every time.
