  Interesting Look at Warren Jeffs

I first heard about this book on Oprah and her story totally fascinated me on that show, so I had to go out and buy the book and I just finished reading this wonderful book. I could not lay it down until I had finished the whole book. I read it in less than 24 hrs and it was not a short book either. It was so detailed about Carolyn Jessop's life in Warren Jeff's world. This reveals what it really was like to be controlled by him. Women were property and only the men had any rights. At age 18, Carolyn became the fourth wife of Merril Jessop and he had his favorite wife which was NOT Carolyn. He was both cold and abusive and he allowed his favorite wife to have control of the other wives and their children. The children of the other wives were severely abused by her. She also found every little thing that the other wives did wrong and she would report it back to her husband and she delighted in doing it too.

It is amazing that she was able to get a degree and slowly came out of the fog that she lived in and ESCAPED from her abusive husband and Warren Jeffs power hungry grip. If you are at all curious about Warren Jeffs, then this is a real eye-opener for sure. This gives you a front row seat to the real Warren Jeffs or maybe you are just curious about the life of the families under Warren Jeff's leadership. It is so detailed from the simple things to the marriage bed. Nothing is held back in this book.

It reads like a novel because it absolutely seems impossible that anything that is real could be more frightening than what occured to this poor girl, but every word of it is absolutely true.

I am adding this information as of 4-10-08 and I am totally shocked at all the things that have happened since I wrote this review. Everything I read in the book has been substantiated since the raid on the compound in Texas. The abuse, brainwashing, beatings, fear is supported in this book.

the book was fascinating reading. carolyn is bright, sensitive, and was seriously screwed up from her destructive and abusive childhood, and then in a marriage to a controlling idiot. in fact, the whole town she grew up in are irreversibly brainwashed. the mormon(LDS) church, is a far cry from the FLDS. my concern with carolyns writing is that she often leaves the reader thinking that the FLDS and the LDS church are "cousins", and very much alike in doctrine and practice. perhaps in her mind this is true, because she lived in an alien world, with other brainwashed people who are NOTHING like the mainstream LDS church, which is everywhere and full of intelligent, educated people who encourage questioning and free thinking. carolyn had none of those normal customs and virtues. the tale of the abuse she suffered at the hands of a childs most trusted care givers, being her parents, teachers, clergy and so-called government officials was too heinous and inhumane to be anything but the truth. while reading it, i often had to put the book away because her intolerable suffering confusion and bewilderment made me physically ill. i was haunted that the atrocities she and others endured and are still enduring right under our noses, and society allows it in the name of "freedom of religion". how this courageous lady escaped this diseased and disgraceful lifestyle, with 8 equally damaged children in tow, is incomprehensible to anyone living in a "normal", non-patriarchal time and place. carolyn describes her very real risk and possibly even lethal consequences of leaving her virtual prison in such a way that the reader can feel her panic and terror, while risking the loss of her children to this cult that masks itself as religion. if i sound like a religious bigot, read this book and decide for yourself. i applaud carolyn and the people who help to rescue those enmeshed in this dangerous prison of the mind and soul, and expose this cult for what it is still doing. carolyn is a survivor in every sense of the word. she wrote an eloquent, matter of fact story that will leave you breathless, engaged, and relieved at the long awaited freedom that this author finally has achieved for herself and her posterity.

At first,my attention was drawn to the intransing photograph on the cover of this book. The expression seemed to be shielding so much experience and struggle. But upon reading this true to life account of man's misinterpritation of women's role in the world, I was impacted in ways I never imagined possible. Carolyn Jessop shattered the mold she had been cast into, with little availability of "trustworthy" direction. Her story is so inspiring to everyone! Her self education, strength, sensitivity, and resourcefullness are enlightening stimulation for ANYONE who needs to make a change for the better in their lives. I cannot emphasize the thrilling emotional experience this story brings to everyone who reads it. I am not a scholar and do not have the vocabulary to express how meaningfully this writing is done. It is an uplifting, thrilling, and satisfying experience to read. I hope you will receive as much from it as I did! To me, it is the most moving book I have read in many, many years! It seems to make so many other books I have read seem so unimportant!

I first saw an interview with Carolyn Jessop on a news network a few weeks ago. She impresssed me as a most articulate and well educated woman who had a story to tell.I had heard about the recent goings on with the FLDS in Texas and listening to her amazing account of life in the FLDS herself ,I felt compelled to learn more. The book seemed to be very scarce in my area. None of the bookstores had her book on the shelves as many people had obviously beaten me to them ,as they too found her interesting.I was very pleased that I was able to win this book on Ebay.I simply love this book and reccommend that everyone read it.This is a piece of American history in itself and people can learn a great deal about the culture of the FLDS.

Very interesting and mind opening book. I have been aware of the religious group for years and knew some of of their beliefs. I became more educated about the group after they moved into Texas. Carolyn Jessup is a brave women to have the courage to leave the group whether or not she had children. I can only imagine how most of the women feel since this is a group they were born into and not something they chose. Carolyn Jessop's story puts you into the group and is a good read. The book helps put you into the mindset of the women and explains how fanatical the religious group has become.

I bought the book, Escape by Carolyn Jessop, because I live in Utah near Colorado City, and I was interested to learn about the life style of the FLDS people, that I often see in my community. The book was very enlightening. I learned much more from this book, than I ever imagined went on in the FLDS community. I applaud Carolyn for her great courage, and strength.

I loved this book because Carolyn Jessop and Laura Palmer did a great job of telling Carolyn's story. She did not hold back, but told it all. It is the first book I have read about polygamy that I feel really lets us see what can go on in a very disfunctional family and religion. I highly recommend it and thank Carolyn Jessop for her courage to write it.

I did not like this book. It was poorly written, repetitive and boring.
I bought it for our book club meeting and the general consensus of most of our members was
negative!!
I'm not interested in cults and if they decide to remain in them and accept the weird doctrines,
so be it.
Definitely not an interesting read. (Actually did not finish it!)

Polygamy is much worse than I thought.
Review created: 08/03/09

I was very intrigued by Carolyn's story and couldn't stop reading her book. I've seen the polygamist families on TV and the women seem to like the lifestyle and defend it. After reading the book, it's clear they have no choice but to be obedient and not complain. Many of them are like slaves with no say whatsover in what happens to their lives — who their husband is, how many kids to have, what to name them, what to wear, eat, etc.
I wasn't prepared to read about the abuse and neglect of so many children. There were parts that were pretty hard to get through. I'm glad Carolyn got out of that terrible life she had.

  This book is incredible.
Review created: 06/23/09

Wow, what a read, I am not an avid book reader but I couldn't put this one down. It is strange, amazing, and sad to think that this is occuring TODAY in our society and not 150 years ago (I had to keep reminding myself of that as I was reading.) What a dynamic and strong woman Carolyn Jessop is. I have always been curious about Fundamentalist Mormons and how their beliefs differ from the mainstream church. This book gives quite a bit of background on their beliefs and practices in addition to telling an amazing story.

Highly recommended. I have read another book of somebodies escape from Colorado City and it did not compare to this book, Easy to understand and comperhend their way of life and how out of wack it actually is. Makes you be thankful for the full truth and not just part of the truth. Jesus Name Baptism and Infilling of the Holy ghost is still the ONLY way just like it was on the Day of Pentecost.

  ESCAPE
Review created: 02/09/09

I got this book for my book club. It was fascinating and very insiteful about the Fundamentalist Mormon faith. It started me researching and was instrumental in my quest for more knowledge on the Book of Mormon and this sect. As far as the writing goes, I would have to say it was a bit tedious and repetitive. Do not read this book if you are looking for a flowing well written work. The facts are presented and you feel her pain and confusion and eventual victory over oppression and brainwashing. After finishing this book, I read Stolen Innocence about the FLDS woman who was married at 14 to her cousin by Warren Jeffs and how she was able to bring him down in the courts and be instrumental in his incarceration. If you read this book, research on line the video "Lifting the veil of Fundamentalist Mormonism". It really is interesting. Mormon scholars seek to verify that the Book of Mormon is accurate and are unable to do so resulting in the realization that Joseph Smith wrote it as a book of fiction in 1830.

Book was fantastic. I couldnt put it down. I read the entire book in 3 days. It made me laugh, cry and feel her pain. The book vividly takes you through her life and paints an incredible portrait of the horrible life she was suffering. I wanted to reach through the pages and grab her and her children and bring them to safety. I reccoment this book to everyone. I even bought a copy for my parents. AMAZING READ. It will leave you humbled and give you a better appreciation and new outlook on life with the freedoms we all take for granted.

  AMAZING! COULD HARDLY BELIEVE.
Review created: 11/07/08

From page 1 I was hooked. I had problems putting the book down. It is hard to believe that it is true-it reads so much like fiction. The only thing was that the end seemed to be zipped thru so fast--I guess I was looking for a little more details about "now" after all the turmoil that I read in previous chapters. It is so impossiable for me to imagine someone going thru and putting up with so much abuse especially when it came to the kids. I could not image standing by and watching kids being kicked in the stomach or hair pulled out of thier head -for no reason. This book was very easy to read. I can't say I enjoyed reading it because of so much abuse that it outlined but it was informative and quite interesting.

  Required reading
Review created: 09/04/08

Could be required reading for anyone desiring to know what really went on in the FLDS--not what the media namby-pambied about. The man she escaped from is now the head of the FLDS, succeeding Jeffs. I wrote everyone of my representatives, etc after reading this and asked them please not to end the investigation. They haven't. I think they are aware also. I pray for Carolyn, her children, the Lost Boys and have donated to the Hope Organization after reading this. She doesn't editorialize, she presents facts and those are beyond imagination.
