  Escaflowne The Movie (DVD, 2002)
Review created: 12/17/09

In this film the events of the television series is retold in a drastically different manner; no previous knowledge of the series is necessary. The story follows Hitomi, a dissatisfied teenager who is suddenly transported to Gaea. There, Van and his brother Folken fight for control of dragon armor, the most powerful mecha in the land; only one will emerge from the conflict alive.
The motion-picture format is perfect for portraying the ethereal vistas of Gaea, floating airships, and the larger-than-life combat between the dragon armors. All of the series' main characters, plus a few new characters, make appearances, though the film's length forces the director to focus on Folken, Hitomi, and Van. Most of the personnel from the series worked on the film, including the popular composers Yoko Kanno and Hajime Mizoguchi, who deliver a beautiful, mystical score.
Giant robot battles, mixed with Teutonic chivalry, teenage angst, and tarot cards, that pretty much sums Escaflowne up. This is one of my favorite movies, it ranks up there with S-cry-ED, Trigun, Hellsing, and Gundam Wing.

  Escaflowne Movie Review
Review created: 05/09/08

This movie uses characters from the anime series escaflowne in a completely new story. Sort of a spin off of the original series. I highly reccomend it, the animation is beautiful, the voices are the same as the ones in the series, the music cannot be matched - its a breathtaking experience over all.

  Different from the Series

I bought this DVD for myself a few years ago when I found out they were making a movie about the series. I wasn't sure what to expect at first, but once I saw it I immediately loved it.

It is very different from the Anime series which I was very surprised about. What I really liked about the movie was that it was very dramatic and a little more of what I would have liked to see in the series. It's basically a condensed version of the series into one movie, with the same characters, just put together differently. Some of the characters are completly different from what they were in the series (Millerna) while others are just portrayed differently (Folken is bad the whole time in this version).

What I really enjoyed was that the movie used the series as a starting point, and makes a lot of subtile references to the series (when Hitomi is falling and Van's wings appear for the first time) but goes in a completely different direction from it. This was a very nice change I thought from some other movies which usually end an Anime series, although I have to admit that I was originally hoping that the movie would address what happened after the series finished.

So overall, I was very pleased with the movie and I would highly recomend it to anyone who is or is not familiar with the Escaflowne series.
