Dark Star
It will surprise no-one that Thom Yorke’s debut solo album is more ‘Kid A’ than ‘The Bends’, but in my opinion his claustrophobic and downbeat songwriting is better served by electronica than blazing guitars.
‘The Eraser’ is a tremendous effort. There is not one bad track here; Yorke’s voice and lyrical vision are as strident and passionate as ever whilst the downbeat electronic backing is atmospheric yet melodic and accessible.
Standout tracks are the title song, driven by Jonny Greenwood’s urgent piano chords and the moving ‘Harrowdown Hill’ written about the death of David Kelly.
Hardcore electronica fans may dismiss this as safe and hardly ground-breaking (it is certainly not Squarepusher) but this is a great record which really stays with you. Rock fans would be advised to check it out, it may seem like a real breath of fresh air.
