Album Notes This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Catatonia includes: Cerys Matthews (vocals). Additional personnel: Elinor Bennett (harp); Chris Allen (hurdy gurdy); Matt Dunkley (strings); Osian Gwynedd (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Paw Whyman (saw). This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Another varied but enjoyable foray into bubblegum pop, and predominantly a vehicle for Cerys' honeyed singing voice, Catatonia's second album indicates a band still exploring several musical directions. After the philanthropic sentiment of the opening "Dead From The Waist Down," the mood deviates somewhat with "Londinium" which contains lyrics deriding the cost of living in London (surely a questionable statement from successful and presumably wealthy pop stars). Moving from a feeling of ennui to a more rousing pseudo-anarchic vein "Storm The Palace" begins with a spine tingling mantra as Cerys derides the institution of the Royal Family. Political agenda by now well established, Catatonia then moves on to something to soothe the seething masses. "Karaoke Queen" is tuneful and lively, but the best songs are ones which lay Cerys' voice bare; "Bulimic Beats," a swooning harp-led affair, followed by "Valerian" are quite beautiful, and indicate a more introspective and personal aspect to the very "now" topical issues that Catatonia generally espouse. A mixed bag of social critique, pure pop and brooding sentiment, Catatonia more than reaffirm their credentials as Wales' perky answer to the Manics.
