Epson Perfection® 4490 Film Scanner (35 mm), Flatbed Scanner

This is the lowest and least expensive model of Epson scanner that can do a reasonably good job of scanning film and slides. It is the least expensive solution to scanning "medium format" or "Brownie format" film negatives, or 35mm film (although for 35mm film, a film scanner like a used Nikon LS-30 or LS-2000 is a MUCH better solution). It has digital ICE defect removal, which is a key feature, enough resoultion and good quality. That is the good news. The bad news is that for these tasks, while this scanner works and does a good if not great job, it is horriffically slow. It is so slow that there is absolutely no way to consider using this for a large job, it can take 20 minutes per image to use this scanner and do it right (preview scan, adjust cropping, exposure, color, then final scan). But there is no other medium format scanning solution for less than about $300, and these are available for $75 to $150, so for small jobs where equipment cost is a big factor, this deserves consideration. [As a normal scanner for paper documents, while there is nothing wrong with this scanner, there are better solutions for much less money, for example an HP 5470C scanner available used in the $10 to $30 range.]
