Album Notes Many politically aware English bands emerged during Margaret Thatcher's tenure as Prime Minster, but few were as vocal about their negative views of her as McCarthy. Though on their second album, THE ENRAGED WILL INHERIT THE EARTH, the band slowed down their rapid-fire approach, they continued use of shimmering guitars to provide a false counterpoint to the aggressive lyrical sarcasm that eviscerated late-1980s British politics. Standouts include "Governing Takes Brains," which takes the point of view of a politician outraged that any of the "scruffy people, the lower orders" could think that his job was easy, "Hands Off or Die," an incisive skewering of class-ism, sexism, and racism, and the brilliantly titled "Keep An Open Mind or Else," which addresses hypocrisy and free speech, all three of which are set against the bright guitar interplay of Tim Gane and Malcolm Eden. Also of note is "Boy Meets Girl So What?" one of few McCarthy songs to address something other than politics, instead focusing on doomed love. McCarthy are an acquired taste to be sure, but THE ENRAGED WILL INHERIT THE EARTH is a must for all politically aware popsters.
