Synopsis
British punk rock was always much more than the back-to-basics musical movement of its American counterpart, being driven as much by social imperatives and politics as by purely artistic motives. In ENGLAND'S DREAMING, John Savage's brilliant, analytical study of the music and the forces that created it, he sees punk as a reaction against both the excess and bombast of much of 1970's rock & roll and the prevailing mood of the time, with its incessant industrial strife, racism, and inklings of Fascism. He paints a vivid picture of a musical and social movement, its fashions, its triumphs, and its tragedies, with an immediacy born of intimate knowledge of, and empathy with, his subject. Savage's narrative allows his rich cast of characters to each bear witness to their place in the story, from Clash and Sex Pistols roadie Roadent, whose comments are unexpectedly insightful, to the Svengali-like Malcolm McLaren, whose characteristically flamboyant description of the Sex Pistols' signing to their record label is worth the price of admission by itself.

Publisher's Note
Savage's critically acclaimed social history of the punk band the Sex Pistols and 1970's England is a searing and disturbingly familiar study of a country suffering from a stagnant economy, a disgruntled work force, and youthful rage. 16-page color insert.

Industry Reviews
"Savage provides much intriguing background information, especially about the suffocating nature of recession-hit 1970's England, along with illuminating quotes from dozens of sources. His narrative is filled with pithy insights that keep their appropriate punch even when wallowing in verbosity. Though at times overly detailed and wordy, still a compelling and intelligent narrative that's as much about the nature of anarchy as about the Sex Pistols and punk rock."
Kirkus Reviews (11/15/1991)
