Enemy at the Gates (DVD, 2001, Sensormatic)

Gives a unique view of the Russian mindset during WWII. We are given insight to the lack of acceptance by the Russian authority for any failure by the commanders or troops to acheive any goal, no matter how unrealistic. A story of a hero that is used to motivate those fighting.

I bought it for my boyfriend, who had been looking around for it, like at Walmart, or anyplace he thought he may find it. Had no luck, so I got on Ebay, found it, and had it in a matter of minutes! So easy to just sit in front of a computer & shop!. I didn't care too much for the movie, but war stuff is not my thing. He loved it!

Set during the imfamous World War II siege of Stalingrad, this
potent thriller follows a battle of wits and wills between renowned
Russian sharpshooter Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law) and top German
sniper Major Konig (Ed Harris). When propaganda from a Red Army
political officer (Joseph Fiennes) turns Zaitsev into a living
legend, it draws the attention of Konig, who comes gunning for his
enemy counterpart and takes on the entire Russian Sniper company
in order to get Zaitsev. Rachel Weisz plays a fellow Russian sniper
and Zaitsev's lover and Bob Hoskins co-stars as the commanding general
of the Russian forces in Stalingrad. Jean-Jacques Annud directed
this movie and it is his best effort yet (others being The Bear,
Seven Years in Tibet, and a few minor movies). War movie and Drama
devotees will enjoy the great sniper shots in this movie and it
will especially provide them with a full night of entertainment.

"Enemy at the Gates" is a very interesting movie about the Battle of Stalingrad. The German forces have invaded The Soviet Union and every Soviet resource is utilized to repell them in this historic battle. Most of the movie is based on fact and is told from the Soviet viewpoint - which adds to the movie's appeal. Very expansive scenes and outstanding special effects. I'd suggest that this be watched at about the same time as the movie "Stalingrad" to obtain the maximum enjoyment. Not recommended for children. This particular version is a 2001 issue in a North American DVD format. Please note that my reviews are written with no knowledge of the potential seller.

Very cool sniper movie. Reminds me of the game Sniper Elite. Great story and great actors. Good enactments of WW2

It a great movie and just cause i love WW2 movie. This movie about Russian vs German, but there is a one hero sniper russian that who take down most of officer and major and this how russain win the war.

Enemy At The Gates is the story of the Russian sniper Vassili Zaitsev. Vassili Zaitsev was a real person and was acclaimed the greatest Russian sniper of World War II. Enemy At The Gates is a fact based movie that is of course glamorized for Hollywood. The movie does reveal to the viewer the hardships faced by the beleaguered defenders of Stalingrad during the German invasion of that city during World War II. It is a dramatic story containing a little for every taste. Vassili falls in love with a fellow defender of the city who is also loved by a man who becomes his best friend. His friend betrays him when he finds that the woman has chosen Vassili over him, but repents and helps Vassili in the end. This is a movie about not normal war, but guerrilla fighting, house to house and street to street. The Russian defenders find themselves short of food, ammunition and few safe havens are available to hide from the German invaders. This movie is a reflection of actual events and does not seek to glorify war but to convey the story of a normal boy who becomes a man during war and eventually, a hero to his countrymen. As in real life and real war, Vassili loses much that he holds dear but fights to save his homeland from the invader. For those of you who like the fast action of movies like First Blood, do not expect the same from this movie. To some, this movie might seem slow at times and the love story woven through it might seem distracting. But the intent is to paint Vassili as a real human being and to make the viewer aware of his character as more than just a soldier. Anyone who wants a taste of what war and the losses derived from it might be like, this movie is a stark example of those trying times. I do not believe it suitable for children and most teens would find it to realistic to enjoy it.

I always wanted to add this film to my home movie collection. Hollywood brought out the real story in the eastern theater during this harsh war. It's a worth watch and playback manytimes. I'm not a big war junky, but this film will blow your boots off.

I am a World War 2 buff and I especially love stories concerning snipers.
This was one well directed movie and kept me on the edge of my chair. I'm so
glad that I now have my own copy of this thrilling epic.

I have been looking for this movie for the last few years and was not able to find it anywhere. This had great special features and is perfect for someone who loves war movies.

This is a must see WWII movie that should be seen. Action seens are well done and from a historical perspective its very realistic.

This movie is a great action movie based around the sniper battles during the battle of stalingad. Though it's very loosly based on the events of the war but even so the suspense of the sniper battles is enough to make any movie great. While the main character, Vasilli Zaytsev, was a real person, most other details where made up or loosly base off of many of his real battles. I highly recomend this movie to anyone who likes WWII and snipers but isn't expecting an real story.

Movie was good and had enormous heart and courage in it. Movie turns bad when it shows Russian leaders shooting their own in order to get them to fight. This cannot be true as it would have had a horrible affect on morale. In Russia the veterans wanted this movie banned because of its false portrayals of shooting their own. Hitler was the monster, not the Russian leaders. Stalin may have been bad but the veterans that were there tell the true story. Individual story line in the movie is good.

this is a good historical war movie. it is pretty realistic. I wish there would have been more combat action in it. It was kind of hard believing jude law as a soldier let alone as a highly traained sniper but for the cost of $3 not a bad flick

I bought this DVD as a middleman for a disabled buyer in Ukraine. I actually deal with his mother. The problem is that although it was sent around the 21st of August, it still hasn't reached him. I've sent him lots of books and some other DVDs recently and all arrived within a reasonable time.

i pay a low price for a brand new movie cheaper then going to redbox or walmart or even blockbuster. I would buy and plan on buying from this seller again.

I bought this movie for my 13 year old son, they started studying WWI and WWII in school and he is now extremely interested in all movies and books that pertain to those time periods, he even purchased a Russian Nagant Rifle which he uses to hunt deer with a family friend in the winter time. That rifle is also featured as the ones used in this movie so he loved it all the more, all in all we were very satisfied with this purchase.

Good acting from two or 3 great actors, including Ed Harris. Sniper vs. sniper is such a cool concept for a war film. It's still not available on blu-ray so I picked this dvd up to enjoy until that happens. Great movie!
