One of the BEST WW II films ever made. The suspense continues right to the end. One of Robert Mitchums best efforts

The enemy below DVD one of the best sub movies ever
Review created: 07/19/09

The enemy below DVD was well packaged sealed and what is expected from a local store bought DVD. The DVD was professionally transfered and not just copied to burned DVD+R media. The label was painted professionally. The transfer was above average not perfect with an old film as this one was. But its ok and worth the price. I would recommend it for all war sub loving movie buffs. One of the best movies showing a true cat and mouse nature of WWII sub warfare also showing the germans in a good light and not blood thristy idiots which most movies depict. You could honestly say you dont know which side the director and writer wanted to win, and thats why this movie is a classic it just tells the story with no political crap or message about how evil war is.

Great Actors In A Great Battle
Review created: 09/25/08
by:

I Just Finished this movie so I'm writing this while it's still fresh in my head. I have seen or own 80% or more of WW2 movies made, some I have are not even in English, I just want to say I have seen many of them and what I write is based on this and how I see them. Robert Mitchum is a great actor, however in this movie he came off as an reg Joe and not the Capt of a war ship, the director made a mistake by making him a "nice guy" that anyone could talk to. A commander cant be "Buddie Buddie" with people under him or her, thats just a fact, and in this movie I felt as if everyone on that ship was of the same rank. The movie is about a Navy destroyer VS a German sub, the special effects are dam good for when this movie was made, you don't get caught up in the "fake" things that bad war movies bring. Normally this type of battle would not go on for as long as it did, the director mended this by inserting a "value" to the subs sinking by giving it a "package" that cant be allowed to get away. This movie was more about outwitting commander vs commander then a war flick. Each veteran commander at points are able to guess each movement of the other until the end. I will not spoil who sinks who but it was a wild ending that made the German commander and crew just as human as the American crew. This is a movie that should be owned by most collectors of Military movies. It's not the best but it has its place.

  This is one to watch!
Review created: 05/23/08

You know, they just do not make them like this anymore. The acting is super, and in spite of the age of this movie, the special effects and acting is just great. This movie kept me until the end and I would watch it again anytime. The human side of the war is really exposed in this movie, and I believe that is what makes this film go great. Take the time and you will not be disappointed.

MORE than a sub movie~Curt Jurgens GREAT entertainment
Review created: 04/30/08(updated 04/30/08)

PLOT: AMERICAN DESTROYER is hot on the trail of a German Sub and the clever stalking by the destroyer is excellent~ IN this one we actually enjoy seeing the German side too~VERY ENTERTAINING~

Robert Mitchum is very good as a new captain to this VERY bored crew~ he spent a month in the hospital recovering from the sinking from his last ship~ the crew suspects he is a "feather merchant" (not very good captain) suddenly the blip on the radar screen has the crew ON edge (US too) as they find a sub they start to track~ suddenly we see the sub crew~ and we like them~ the Captain being Curt Jurgens NOT a die hard Nazi but a German Captain who was drug into the service but is disgusted with HIS die hard nazi crew~ suddenly this clever blend of BOTH sides. The Fun begins when the destroyer uses some clever ploys to get the sub to shoot with their BOW tubes. the CREW see how good Mitchum really IS~but the sub crew HAS some clever moves of their own~ the FUN part as soon as the Americans make a clever move the Germans make one equally clever! the stand off battle is EXCELLENT AND WELL WRITTEN. the end is very UPbeat and not expected~ DIRECTED BY DICK POWELL AND THIS MOVIE WON A SPECIAL EFFECTS OSCAR FOR 1957. more than a typical sink the sub movie~ I loved the ending~

I GIVE THIS 10 OUT OF 10~

IF YOU FOUND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE~

Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgen's portrayal of opposing ship captains during
a way was excellent. They both bring strong carisma to the wide screen.
The roles show the tough regimen and hardship that was required during the
real-time war. The back up roles of supporting actors were necessary to
show the all around characters of that time.

The open sea movie shots were impressive and I love the sea anyway.
