Great Actors In A Great Battle

I Just Finished this movie so I'm writing this while it's still fresh in my head. I have seen or own 80% or more of WW2 movies made, some I have are not even in English, I just want to say I have seen many of them and what I write is based on this and how I see them. Robert Mitchum is a great actor, however in this movie he came off as an reg Joe and not the Capt of a war ship, the director made a mistake by making him a "nice guy" that anyone could talk to. A commander cant be "Buddie Buddie" with people under him or her, thats just a fact, and in this movie I felt as if everyone on that ship was of the same rank. The movie is about a Navy destroyer VS a German sub, the special effects are dam good for when this movie was made, you don't get caught up in the "fake" things that bad war movies bring. Normally this type of battle would not go on for as long as it did, the director mended this by inserting a "value" to the subs sinking by giving it a "package" that cant be allowed to get away. This movie was more about outwitting commander vs commander then a war flick. Each veteran commander at points are able to guess each movement of the other until the end. I will not spoil who sinks who but it was a wild ending that made the German commander and crew just as human as the American crew. This is a movie that should be owned by most collectors of Military movies. It's not the best but it has its place.
