On Flaw's 2001 debut album, THROUGH THE EYES, the band delivers an appealingly straightforward set of metallic hard rock that combined the mainstream pop smarts and production sheen of bands such as REO Speedwagon and Journey with sensitive, emo-tinged lyricism. ENDANGERED SPECIES finds the band further refining its signature sound with a collection of songs that explores existential angst, but with a clarity of vision and realistic outlook that encourages rather than depresses. Alternating between thick nu-metal bombast and gentle acoustic balladry, the group eschews cliched adolescent ranting in favor of a mature and thoughtful metal hybrid that should appeal to both headbangers and lovers of melancholy pop.
