This is a textbook which is one of the most readable I have ever come across. I am not enrolled in a course or using this for any sort of formal scholarship, but just trying to learn more about the context and surroundings of Bible times. In just a few chapters I have found information which I personally have been hard-pressed to find anywhere else. First thing which I noticed was their bringing the cities and localities of the old Testament and giving you a map reference to their exact location on a present day map. As I previously stated above, I find the writing style very interesting and readable. WIll likely be looking for the companion Nrew Testament volume when I finish this one. I highly recommend it.

I needed this for a college class. I definitely liked the price here better than the school was selling it. It was kept in excellent condition. It is extremely helpful with my class. Overall it is a very good book.

Encountering the Old TestamentI like this book because, it is some what based on the bible. I got this book about two weeks ago. I don't have any dislikes at this time. We have not started the class yet. I decide to buy this book because, I needed it for a college class.

I am currently doing a Bible Study in the books of: Ezra, Nehemiah, Zechariah, Haggai and Esther. My teacher has this book and I found it truly fascinating. I love it.
I received this book quickly and it was in great condition. the only reason I didn't mark excellent is because it was not new, although very close.

Valuable resource for Bible studyI bought this book after seeing it used by a Bible study teacher. It contains wonderful photographs and a book by book commentary on the entire Old Testament. Since the Old Testament paints such a clear picture of Jesus and lays a good foundation for understanding the New Testament, I think having good resources to aid in understanding are vital. This book is such a resource.

I bought this book for a Bible College course, but as I've read it I've really started to enjoy it. This is this quality of book that I will keep for my future library because of the information level it has and it's interest level. If you are interested in the Old Testament, I recomend this book to you.

The textbook Encountering the Old Testament was a wonderful investment. While I ordered the book for school, I plan on keeping it after finishing the course because of the easy-to-understand explanations of an often difficult topic. The language is intellectual, yet simple enough to not leave a beginner lost. The pictures add to the information, and help explain in a visual way that I found very effective. I have no doubt that I will find this book useful in and out of the classroom as I delve into the Old Testament.

I needed this book for a Seminary class but found it to be more readable than almost anything else I've been assigned. The format is crystal clear--very easy to follow the writers' direction in each chapter. I am familiar with other "handbooks" that give descriptive overviews of the Bible, but this is by far the best. Anyone from teenager on up would have no trouble reading this interesting text. The display on each page is inviting, as is the quality paper it's printed on. Photographs are interesting and fitting. Chapter summaries are concise and very helpful. End-of-chapter questions point the reader back directly to the text they are based on. Good study aid for my exams. The CD it comes with, however, is nothing to speak of. Simplistic, doesn't add anything to the reading.
