Synopsis A vain king is bamboozled by two con men who trick him into believing that he's wearing the most elegant of outfits although he is really completely naked.
This expanded version of the traditional tale consists of a series of vignettes written by celebrities and illustrated by well-known artists. For example, Madonna tells the story from the perspective of the Emperor's Wife (illustrated by Daniel Adel) while Robin Williams fills in as the Court Jester (illustrated by Berkeley Breathed), Liam Neeson appears as the Imperial Prime Minster (illustrated by Maurice Sendak) and Rosie O'Donnell chimes in as the Imperial Throne (illustrated by Tomie dePaola). Each book comes packaged with a CD of the celebrities reading their stories. All royalties from the sale of the book go to the Starbright Foundation, a charitable organization "committed to improving the lives of seriously ill children."
Two rascally weavers convince the emperor they are making him beautiful new clothes, visible only to those fit for their posts, but during a royal procession in which he first wears them, a child whispers that the emperor has nothing on.

Publisher's Note Hans Christian Andersen's tale of vanity and foolish pride has long been a favorite. This new and sumptuously illustrated version, in which the Emperor is depicted as a pompous lion and the members of his court and land as richly adorned animals, elevates foolishness and foppery to a new level. Full-color illustrations.
Industry Reviews Duntze embroiders the classic story with exquisite visual details; her lanky, angular people with a jaundiced glow add a playfully sinister note. Ages 5-8. (Apr.) Lopate
