Holland; J Stout; M. Linnen; Barry B. Underground lo-fi heroes Monroe Mustang's second full length is a little less "lo" and a little more "fi" than their first. Their pop songs have a little more "pop.'' (The opening track is immediately more accessible than anything they've done previously.) Their ballads are even lovelier, and their slowcore is even slower. "Bottle Rocket" proceeds at an inhumanly slow tempo. What hasn't changed is the title track, which is a virtually identical (minus the trumpet) version of a song that appears on their first disc. Monroe Mustang has the additional distinction of being on the extremely cool Jagjaguwar label, which seems incapable of releasing a bad disc. In short, this is a document that shows an already good band getting better.
Editorial Reviews The sleeper of the summer may end up being THE ELEPHANT SOUND....[the album] is gracefully shambling and texturally elegant. Magnet (08/01/1999)
...The deeply resonant songs of Monroe Mustang will strike a chord with listeners who like their music slow, thoughful and disarming....Sonorous and subdued, Monroe Mustang's music isn't an outpouring of emotion; it's an exercise in tension and restraint... CMJ (05/31/1999)
...map out a similar territory to Wil Oldham with their brand of mournful, raw Country blues rippled with psychedelic undertones....but they have a wide enough musical palatte...to defer feelings of yawning predictability. The Wire (09/01/1999)
