The Elegant Universe (DVD, 2004)

I have been collecting easy to read books about physics for many years. The Elegant Universe is one of the best. As a high school teacher, I expect to use the book with its accompanying DVD, along with many other resources to create an after school program about our weird and wondrous Universe. Brian Greene and The Elegant Universe will be the central focus. The book has an index, a glossary and a notes section missing in many books. From my perspective, the book gets an A+.

Very happy with this purchase. The movie was fantastic. I had no idea that it was actually a three disc set! All for the price I would have paid for one disc. The product came pretty quick too!

all together a good popular science movie about very difficult stuf :):)
great animation to make the difficult stuff understandable.
however there are a quite some repetitions of parts of the movie , for me thats annoying. also the advertisements didnt need to be so long :(.

This is a splendid reenacting of the discovery and the investigation of String Theology, until yesterday the most influential theology in theoretical physics. And String Theory is wholly theoretical there is no possibility of its empirical verification. There are good interviews here with major physicists and good history sequences.

I already own one, so I purchased the dvd to give it away as a gift to a fellow Assistant District Attorney down here in Puerto Rico. It is the most interesting dvd I've ever watched. Since I was young I've been interested in the existence of other worlds. I highly recommend it with only one suggestion: please try to have it translated to other languages (Spanish, to be specific) so many more people benefit from it. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Very good production. Great explanation of the string theory and how the universe works. Could have been longer, But enjoyable for the real science fans.

ABOUT THE DVD:

It does not matter that the author feels that the Theory of Everything (or Grand Unification Theory) can be explained by String Theory. What is more brilliant is that we can take a new look at Astrophysics and Quantum Physics, through a new lens. String Theory is complex, and while I personally think that the TOE or GUT will be 'made up' of simple 'waves', 'bundles of energy' or 'whatevers', String Theory is very mysterious. So mysterious that I have often thought the energies these scientists talk about, are god - one and the same entity. Great visuals, intriguing explanations, and entertaining.

The Da Vinchi Code has some helpful insights, however its heterosexist stance that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene is quite out of keeping with the homosexual hero stories and homosexual religious masters who have spanned history and prehistory. We genuinely enjoyed this DVD. For persons with a mind to physics or mathematics, this provides a great history of physics in general. Although the concepts of string theory are grossly inadequate to form any solid conclusions (so far) the documentary does a fine job of presenting them and their history in a concise format which makes them easier to grasp as potential core components of the universe(s). For anyone who enjoys science and is curious about the universe, this is a must-have.

I liked this because it showed me a new theory of the universe. I was referred to this by a teacher I had. Very new and eccentric theories and I like them.

It tackles one of the most difficult of subjects to understand, and acutally lets a light go on even in the most obtuse minds. He makes, what for all practical purposes, is a lecture, one of the most enthralling DVD I have ever watched on the sublect. Starting at the basic, Newton, bringing it into reletivity, and then the problem when you reduce the theory down to the quantum level. Whether or not the strings are out there for us to find, he makes a very good case for them.

I saw the original on Nova and enjoyed it very much. Was going to purchase it directly from PBS, but found it cheaper on eBay!
