Remember mom's old reliable Electrolux? This isn't it. Not even close.

You see, there are two Elextrolux companies - one based out of Europe, and another based out of America. The old Electrolux you remember was made by the American company. This particular vacuum (the Electrolux Oxygen) is made by the European company. It's a totally different vacuum, and NOTHING like the "original" that you are thinking about.

I almost got "sucked" into one of these Oxygen vacuums, but did a little research and learned that the original Electrolux is now sold under the "Aerus" name. They're a lot more expensive than the Oxygen (the Oxygen retails for around $400 to $500, while the basic Aerus model retails for about $1100), but you get what you pay for. After comparing both, I'm glad I didn't fall for the Oxygen.

The hose on the Oxygen is very flimsy - so much so, that a common criticism of the Oxygen is torn hoses. In contrast, I can stand all 200 pounds of my weight on the hose of my Aerus, and it won't buckle.

Bags for the Oxygen aren't cheap either; a package of 40 bags sells for $110 to $120 (roughly $3 per bag). The same package of bags for the Aerus sells for about $40 ($1 per bag).

In terms of suction, the Oxygen is middle-of-the-road. In a side-by-side comparison, there was _no_ comparison with the Aerus. The little Oxygen would probably do an OK job in an apartment or small house, but I wasn't confidant that it would handle week after week of vacuuming pet hair from our carpets.

The Oxygen comes with a two year warranty. The Aerus comes with a ten year warranty.

For the money, the Oxygen 3 may be an acceptable vacuum cleaner; make sure you understand that you are not buying a "modernized" version of your mom's old vacuum. If you really want the quality and durability you expect from the "Electrolux" name (and you're willing to spend considerably more on a vacuum), go take a look at the Aerus vacuums. Once you see the two side-by-side, you'll see that there's really no comparison.

Top rated canister in Consumer Report

This is the top rated canister vacuum in Consumer Report which is not biased; they do not accept advertising or any kind of payment from the makers of the products they review. I have used this Electrolux Oxygen model and it has as much power as the top rated upright vacuums but without the bulk and weight; also, it does just as good a job. I have not used an Aerus, the original Electrolux, but at almost three times the price any comparisons between it and the Oxygen are not very meaningful.

I had heard that the Electrolux was suppose to be one of the best canister vacuums sold. So far I have been pretty pleased with it. I like it because of the power and the easiness in using it. I think it stands by the name. I am glad it is not a bagless because I have heard that you have to clean them throughly every time you use them. I have a golden labrador and did not realize how much they shed, the Electolux seems to pick up most of the hair. I had actually bought 2 in error, and my sister-in-law bought the other one right away because she used to have one of the older models and loved it.

  Very happy with vacuum

I Love how much suction this vacuum has and how easy it is to go from vacuuming the carpet to using the hand attactments. The only thing is that the vacuum attachment for the carpet is that I wish it would go up one more notch higher. Otherwise I have no other problems with this vacuum. I do also like the look of it too!

New, improved Oxygen 3 model EL7020B
Review created: 05/30/08(updated 06/03/08)

The unit is small, light, cleans very well, has modern design features, excellent filtration due to its special "S" type filter bags, HEPA filter, and sealing system for the filter door. Also, this new model 7020B has a larger power head, and is quiet!

Yes, this new Electrolux is not the heavy old tank vacuum of the past, but it looks and works great, stores easily, and doesn't cost any more than many "middle of the road" vacuums. Recommended!

  Electrolux El7000 oxygen series A+++++++++++

I have had many vacuums and this was my first "high end vacuum" and I love it. I researched vacuums for 3 months before I purchased it at Lowes. I thought I paid a pretty penny for it but nothing compared to a Kirby or Rainbow. The machine is quiet and very powerful. If you have children It passes the infant test, my 9 month old rides the cannister like a horse while I am vacuuming. The bag design is genius, it is almost clothlike and has a perfect seal to the unit and when you remove it the electrolux bags close the opening when you pull it out. Some aftermarket bags have a small flap that pulls over the opening to keep the dirt in. The filtering system works great, I recently remodeled my bathroom and I had done some drywall work. There was drywall dust everywhere, I thought what a great opportunity to try it out. The cannister was in the hallway with the 9 month old and I vacuumed the drywall dust into the unit and it pulled it up like a high end shop vac. I peeked into the hallway to see if there was any sign of dust in the hallway and it was completely clean. Between the electrolux S bag and the hepa filter, it caught everything. Try that with a water filled Rainbow, you will end up with a cannister full of putty. It does not have a closet full of tools to deal with so the compact design makes it real easy to store, it kind of has a nice paint job too so it looks good just sitting against the wall. The power head took a little getting used to as far as maneuvering but I got used to it, it's my first cannister vac. It condemned three uprights before I bought this one. I have three girls in my house with long hair so my beater bars and bearings did not last long, then the whole vac was rendered useless. This one with the detachable tools I can just remove the power head and use another tool. If something does go wrong I still have a vacuum. Very happy with my choice.

We bought this model because we have relatives who own it. In fact, the model we purchased is slightly newer than the ones they own. It is very quiet and does pick up well. The handle is very convenient due to the extension and detaching capabilities. My only gripe with it is the swivel end of the beater brush. Maybe its because I'm left handed but it takes extra effort to direct the tip where I want it to go.

It is not the Electrolux of old with that absolute high-end quality of everything, but a mix of cheaper (plastic) components with excellent modern design and functionality. It is much cheaper, but if were a millionaire, I would still prefer it. The power head is simply top - gets nasty cat hair etc. off the carpets in 1 pass - and it pulls you like a lawn mower. If you plan the job correctly, you get done with everything in 1 pass and overall spend a third of the time on vacuuming, especially with pet hair. It is lighter than older vacuums, and above all, has this egg shape with huge wheels, so that it does not get hung up of furniture. In the Oxygen 3 Ultra, pretty much everything is upgraded vs. the other Oxygen 3 models: The controls are on the handle, you can turn the motor of the power head on/off from there, you can change from weak to full suction, and you can turn the whole vacuum off from there, very convenient. The cord is extra long, high-qiality retrieval mechanism. Functionality is absolutlely the best, the buttons and plastic parts are subject to wear and how kindly you will treat your unit over time. Overall, highly recommended.

  Electrolux 7020A Oxygen 3 Canister
Review created: 05/08/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've had Electrolux vacuums for years, and bought this model based on a friend's recommendation, who also had a long-haired dog. While considerably lighter, this model handles both the rugs and the floors well. It does seem to suck up more of the dirt and hairs than my previous machines and it stores in a tight space, as well. The telescoping wand and on handle controls are a big improvement, too.

So far, I am not disappointed.

Other then that the vac. works great, has alot of suction! Overall very satisfied with item!!

Electrolux Oxygen Canister Vaccum is 5stars*****

The Oxygen electrolux is pretty powerful and quiet compared to other vaccums. I am very pleased with it, plenty of attachements for the household vaccuming jobs, great job on pet hair, I am really happy with it. One thing I do not like is the placement of the on/off bottons on the handle as I tend to shut it off by accident while vaccuming. That's the only thing that needs a better design. I have a long haired cat, dog and 3 kids and this vaccum does an excellent job from floors to carpet, to stairs. Plenty of different settings manually as well as an automatic detection settings. Excellent buy for the money.

  Small vacuum very effective

My whole family agrees that this vacuum "sucks" well. Reconfiguring the vacuum from carpet to floor to stairs required instructions, as did adjusting the various buttons and levels. Once learned, however, the adjustments are logical. The large floor head is not stored within or on the vacuum, which is a negative. We almost threw the large floor head away before we realized it went with the new vaccum. Other attachments are stored on the handle at the end of the hose. I really like how the powered vacuum head easily swivels. The motor unit is small, relatively light weight, easy to carry, and quite cute.

  Electrolux Oxy 3 Canister Vacuum
Review created: 08/05/09

I did a lot of research on the internet and in stores before deciding to buy this vacuum. I have all tile floors, and a bunch of big, hairy dogs. My old (25+ years)Miele vacuum is still chugging along, but I wanted a supplement cleaner for the first story of my house so the Miele could go upstairs. I need a cleaner with power, quality and portability, and looked at a number of brands and models and rejected them as too large and too flimsy, or, as in the case of the Miele model that was comparable to my old cleaner, too expensive.

The Oxy 3 is a sturdy, well-built, powerful cleaner that is light weight compared to many others I saw. I admit my expectations are high since I am used to the Miele cleaner. The Oxy 3 seems to be close in quality to the Miele, for 1/3 of the price. I hope it lasts as long. I would highly recommend the Oxy 3.

Lightweight, good suction. Only left swivel on wand, though. This truly gets in the way of handling when vacuuming. Filters and bags are more expensive than most but provide good dust filtration and containment.

I have a combination of wood floors and area rugs - plus a Great Dane that tracks in lots of stuff from outdoors. I was tired of upright vacuums that seemed to spit the dirt out the other end and spread it around rather than pick it up. This vacuum cuts my cleaning time by about 1/3 because it is so efficient. I love the fact that I can reach just about anywhere with it. Well worth the money spent!
