The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe (1999, Paperback, Reprint)

I've always enjoyed reading books by Tom Wolfe. This book was no exception; Although his writing style was very different from all the books I've read by him so far. This book was such a product of the era, as was the writing style. It reminded me of all the great writers of that time such as Jack Karouack. The free consciousness experimental style of the late 50's and 60's was perfected in this book. I loved reading about all the great characters of that time. I thought I knew about the 60's but now I know how and who were some of the important people and events who furthered and the cause. It is an American classic because the topics of discussion that were relevant then are still the topics of discussion in today's American culture.

And all these years I've been telling everyone that Ken Casey wrote it...

A history lesson about LSD, and the summer of love, through surrealism based on actually events that Tom Wolfe was involved with, as well as other well known icons from that era of time such as Hunter S. Thompson and Jerry Garcia. After reading about the summer of love and about the whole Owsley Stanley creating the pure form of LSD and writer Ken Kesey and the merry pranksters destorying the minds of people in search of opening doors of the mind that aren't suppose to be opened. A wild book with twists and turns in a time of history where a new way thought was beginning.

My professor recommended me to read 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' for my English Lit. class. It captures a piece of time in history that can never be relived. 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' was written when LSD was not yet illegal and one could say that the main characters are who started the psychedelic movement in the sixties that has somewhat carried on into today.

The basic idea is that they all go around the United States and Mexico in a bus wired to pick up sounds on the inside and outside as they record their experiences of their adventure for a movie. They have gatherings where music is played, sometimes by the Grateful Dead and movies and slides are shown. This is where the ‘heads’ gather and see life as many may never experience on LSD.

I would recommend this book to everyone, especially if you listen to any sort of music from the 60's, it gives an insight and greater appreciation to the generation even outside of music.

I personally enjoy satire along with Tom Wolfes style. The book was sent to me in an outstanding state. I always love the smell of a new book. The only flaw was that the cover damages easily, but in the end it's no trouble at all. With the right care it will be well.
