The Good

* Huge, lavishly detailed world offers tremendous amount of action and adventure
* Main mechanics like combat, stealth, and magic are fun and well designed
* Impressive artificial intelligence and hundreds of believable characters
* Outstanding symphonic score, as well as excellent voice acting and sound effects
* Tremendous replay value, plus gorgeous graphics to make it easy on the eyes.

The Bad

* Frequent though fairly brief loading times
* You might run into some technical issues with performance.

This is a rare and remarkable achievement--a huge, open-ended, complex, detailed role-playing game that's fun to play and a pleasure to behold. Oblivion not only delivers everything that earned the Elder Scrolls series the devoted loyalty of a huge following of fans, but also significantly improves on the weaknesses of its 2002 predecessor, Morrowind. Morrowind earned recognition for being one of the best role-playing games in years, but the immersive and long-lasting experience it provided wasn't for everyone. Oblivion is hands-down better, so much so that even those who'd normally have no interest in a role-playing game should find it hard to resist getting swept up in this big, beautiful, meticulously crafted world.

Morrowind was a tough act to follow, but Oblivion isn't just better--it's a lot better.

The Elder Scrolls series is known for its sheer size and depth. These are games that you could lose yourself in, spending hours exploring a fantasy world, traveling for miles, or just looking for minutiae, such as rare plants or hidden treasure. Oblivion lives up to this pedigree, putting you into a massive, cohesive, highly immersive world. You get to create your own character--the possibilities for customization seem limitless--and then explore the world as you will. There's a compelling main quest for you to follow, which takes about 40 hours to finish the first time through, but the majority of the game's content is peripheral to that main quest. You can root out evil in hidden dungeons, join and climb the ranks in a number of different guilds, visit all the different towns and try to solve everybody's problems, compete in a long series of gladiatorial battles to the death, break into someone's home and rob them in their sleep, get caught and face the consequences, contract a disease that leads to vampirism and then try to find a cure, buy a house, steal a horse, invest in your favorite shop, and, if you can believe it, there's much more.

So the breadth of content is as remarkable as ever, but the most important thing is this: The many types of gameplay in Oblivion are well-designed and deeply satisfying, even when taken on their own. That's the main difference between this game and Morrowind. This may be a role-playing game, but you could play it like a pure action game, or like a stealth game, or like an adventure game, and it'd still be at least as good as, if not better than, games that are specialized in these regards.

Oblivion does a great job of quickly introducing you to all these different aspects of play, successfully engaging you rather than overwhelming you. You see the world through your character's eyes, but a behind-the-back perspective is also available. Initially you just pick a name, race, and gender for your character, and the game opens with you stuck in a dungeon cell, being taunted by a fellow inmate.

Overall Rating: An 11/10

the game is loads of fun. it has some oddball quirks that can be annoying. You have to be very careful not to steal something when you try to talk to someone. Also, if you stay at an inn, and sit at a table, the food in front of you is not for you, i found that out the hard way. you also have to be careful during combat. It is too easy to switch into sneak mode, which slows you down if you try to move to a more advantageous spot and it is too easy to switch to close perspective and you can lose control of where your opponents are.
the rest of the game is fun. The graphics are great. The stroyine right now is deep and I have a ton of things to do in it that I can do any way I choose. There seems to be an unlimited number of ways you can run a character, some who specialize in fighting, some can specialize in trading, and they all have a rank and can go up as you gain experience. there are over 20 different stats that can go up or down as you start off on your adventure.
Overall, I'd give it an A-

Elder Scrolls IV OBLVION is AWESOME!

This game could last forever and I would never get bored! If I reach the end as one character, then I can start a new adventure as another. The graphics are outstanding. I feel as if I am actually IN Another World somewhere! I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys the adventure and problem solving type of games. There are a million different adventures in this ONE GAME and I will eventually play as many as I can. This was Well Worth the price, because now I have no desire to buy any other game for my PS3, at least not for a very long time. Warning: This IS addictive and may hinder your relationships with others as you will want to spend all your spare time being a part of this "Other World".

The shear scope of this game is amazing, best rpg ever

Firstly, the only reason i bought this game is because of the shear awesome that was Fallout 3, and that it was made by the same people. I've come to enjoy sandbox type games where you don't HAVE to do ANYTHING. I love playing this game for many reasons. If I want to play but none of my quest sound interesting atm I can always just run (or ride my horse) in a direction that I've never been and something interesting will be there, EVERY TIME. I've already played for 70 hrs and haven't done much of the main story line, it's just way too easy to get side tracked. I still have yet to check out the expansion at all, which gives me hope for having way over 200 hours of game play. I can't say I've ever bought a game with value quite that good. I paid $27 for a game that will keep me busy for months to come. I highly recommend this game if you like open RPGs, you wont be disappointed. I have only one complaint and it's not that bad. There are a few glitches in this game, but that's normal with Bethesda games that i've played. They arn't as bad as in fallout 3 where sometimes the game would just frees my system completely. BUY THIS GAME, YOU WONT BE SORRY.

All round RPG.
Players can literally get lost in the lush enviroments and populated towns for 100's of hours.
Great story as well as compelling game play.
Little texture popping in and out, but really is not anything to worry about.
Great game.
10/10

Oblivion is an amazing RPG game. This is a game that can be played over and over again and never have the same play through. The games graphics are top notch. The story line is deep with many twists, but there are many other side quests you can do as well.

Visually stunning and incredibly fun to loose yourself into. It's also great to be able to pick it up or walk away from it without losing your spot or reach the end of a level, or get involved with one of the many side quests for an hour.

This game is really awsome! You can pick your class of person you want to be. You can design the way they look (in the face) and I would guess it would take you to do all it had, 500+ hours. You have to get the manual though. But it is worth it! You can explore caves, do missions, join 4-5 different "clubs". One is the theives guild, the mages guild(my favorite), the dark brotherhood, and fighters guild. Like I said, get the book to it. So many things to do like you can steal from some one and they throw you in jail. The other people interact with you through out the game. It is basically a role playing game. You can do what you want, be who you want to be, do missions etc. The game is huge!! Bigger than Final fantacy 12 ps2. Which I love that game too. This one is just as good if not better. I would recomend this to anyone with nothing else to do but sit and entertain yourself for weeks on end. It never gets boring unless you want it to.

  The best RPG out there.

As far as the sheer volume of stories, plots nad quests, this is an excellent example of a role playing game. To follow all the quests will take an average player months of play time. There are short and simple ones as well as long an complex ones - the choices seem endless but all quite interesting and exciting. Just walking down a street of any town, will initiate a long list of quests and that's on top of the main storyline that is quite exciting and very complex by itself. While the graphics are not top of the line PS3 (the game was not written specifically for PS3) they are quite adequate to thoroughly enjoy this game visually. The music is quite beautiful and appropriate for the action sequences and completes the experience beatifully. One great game.

I had gotten this game for my fiance's birthday, and he has enjoyed it greatly, it was exactly what he wanted and he's played it whenever he can. It has a wonderful storyline, excellent graphics, and an enjoyable AI system. And it came before I was expecting it, so all around it was well worth it!

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion-Game of the Year Edition
Review created: 11/03/08
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This was my first experience playing the Elder Scrolls series and for the most part it was an extremely enjoyable game. This game is like a first person shooter without guns...but you do get a bow and arrow if you choose. I will explain some of the good and some of the bad points about it. The strongest point of Oblivion is the sheer magnitude of the landscape and the ability to search and do anything you want. In all honesty if you explore every cave and every fort and complete every quest on the map it can take you near or past 200 or more hours!! I loved this part of the game as it kept me wanting to find new things for days. Also of note in the Game of the Year Edition (GOTY) you get an additional map AND quests that can add nearly 20 more hours of game play! So if you are wondering which edition to buy (standard or GOTY) go for the GOTY because you get everything in the standard edition plus the extras. There is a great deal of customization from the way you do quests to the character you create and you will spend hours doing anything and everything you want. However as you play for a few hours you will notice that things seem to get rather boring...Which brings me to the bad part of the world of Oblivion. Yes you can spend days and months playing and doing everything out there but you will soon notice that every time you explore a cave or start killing bandits in all of the forts...they all start to look the same and the bad guys rarely change as well. Let’s say you're wandering around and you stumble upon a cave you havn't seen before...you go in, loot the treasure and head out again...you then find another cave several miles away and you're saying "ALRIGHT!! I FOUND ANOTHER ONE" you go inside and loot the treasure and think to yourself "was I just in here?" All caves and all forts while different in the way their set up (meaning in one cave you'll have to cross a river or something and the next cave you'll have to go through a maze) offer you little difference in the way they look. So yes there are hundreds of places to explore but if you do look in all of them, it gets extremely dull after awhile. Another bad point is the bugs and glitches. Some are small little things that look out of place while others are darn right nasty. It happened to me several times where I was doing an entire quest and in the end a glitch prevented me from completing it. This is probably my main gripe so heed my words...SAVE and save often in this game because I can almost guarantee you that at some point you'll be playing for hours and a bug will hit and you'll want to go back and restart but can't do it. The glitch/bug problem along with sometimes monotonous gameplay prevents me from giving Oblivion GOTY an absolutely perfect score (I don’t give a perfect score unless it is a perfect game). But hear me out, this game is a must have or at the very least a must play. It is massive and absolutely gorgeous in graphics and is one of the greatest games I own.

This purchase has been made for almost 2 months (they sucked the money immediately out of my account) & I have YET to receive this Product (so I CAN'T review it) or even get a response from this vendor about WHY I haven't received it. I think I've been RIPPED-OFF and I trusted you people (EBAY & PAYPAL) to protect me from such incidents. I don't have ANY extra money to just throw out to some jerk in the "guise" of being a legitimate purchase of a birthday gift for my son. I'm an honest single Mom, who works hard for her money.

Just take 2 minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It literally
takes 10 minutes to setup. Simply follow the steps below. I promise you,
this is 100% real. I will answer you on any question! Here is what you
do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is
the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete
the 1 offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). This
is not like other sites where you need to complete one offer on 2 or 3
different pages!!! And a lot of these offers are FREE trials with
nothing else to buy...No commitments!!!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster
online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would
regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use
them to get a free PS3 System or cash (I did the Stamps.com for a 30 day
free trial and it never cost me a penny and I received credit for it the
same day). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you.
After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 8-14 people
(depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link
(just post the same thing as I have on eBay, and you'll get your
referrals before the auction even ends.)

Then they will ship your PS3 System or your selected item for free, I
chose the PS3 80gb System. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these
companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all
the referrals. All you have to do is post it ! They use us as
advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which goes
toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as
Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc... You can copy my listing if you
want. You must use your own authentic link though. You will get your own

I'm a big gamer, both on the PC and PS3 console. I've loved Oblivion from the moment I opened it. It has SOOO much content and the quests are not all linear. I've created multiple characters and each one is a bit different than the last. The graphics are outstanding. You can see shadows, wakes, and cities in the distance. By far the best of the elder scroll's games so far.

Good but 360 Version has extras
Review created: 11/27/09
by:

All in all this is a great game. I had this game on 360 and sold my system. I now have it for PS3. Graphics are excellent, looks the same as the 360. Gameplay is the same as well. The difference is the 360 version, as well as PC version, has some extra downloadable things that the PS3 doesn't. Examples are the Wizard's Tower. Not included in the PS3. As well as Tomes, a few other items, the pirates cove and a couple of quests. If you never played the 360 or PC versions with the downloads, then you won't even know what I'm talking about and is still a great game. Also, the PS version does not have trophies for this game and the 360 version had achievements. Again, all in all a great game and still recommend this game. Has hours upon hours of great gameplay. If you beat it has a straight up warrior, then try it and as a thief or magician or customize your own character.

Review created: 10/09/09

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the PS3 is a great addition to the library of any RPG fan. It combines elements of traditional dungeon crawlers with the openness of a MMORPG. If you like your RPGs massive (over 100 hours) and nonlinear, then this is the a game for you. However, if you like bit more direction be warned: it is very easy to get caught up into side quests and forget entirely about the main story.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion GOTY (xbox 360)
Review created: 08/25/09

I had previous editions of the game and really liked playing them, so I decided to get the next in the line and try it out.

I love the sheer amount of options you have to customize your character to your own tastes. The large open ended world can be somewhat overwhelming at first, but the more you explore the better it gets! You get to test your skills against man and beast. There are a myriod of choices for weapons and armour for you to use to enhance your experiences during the quests! I reccomend it to anyone who loves character developement. Personally, this is one game I do not plan on ever selling!
