In this book a little bunny thinks of how to get away from his mother and being her little bunny. His mom has a reply for everything ans he eventually decides he might as well just stay as he is. Good mixture of black and white and color illustrations. This is a great bedtime story, as well as a book that beginning readers can read to themselves.

It is a classic - I am a great-grandmother. I buy "our" baby books over ebay to keep in my car/house - as she has many at her own home. For the most part the books over ebay are in excellent condition. However, I have had 2 with coffee cup stains that could have been easily wiped off before they were mailed.
Won't use that seller again. Ebay is a great resource for grandparents who want to keep "extras" (toys, clothes, etc) at their own homes but do not need to buy them new. When I am finished I usually donate them. Local hospitals can always use children's books as kids get very bored in waiting rooms.

  The Runaway Bunny
Review created: 01/03/09

I try and find something special for my daughters at Christmas that is a piece of their past. Both of my daughter's are grown and finding what was once a favorite of theirs is a way of letting them know I haven't forgotten when they were little. The Runaway Bunny was perfect for my oldest because she is having her first child and she will have the joy of reading it to him.

ISBN 0061074292 - I'm kind of surprised to find myself mostly up the middle on this book. Largely loved, it does have good points, but it's hardly the outstanding story I'd expected. I'd give it 2 1/2 stars but can't, so 2 it is.

A nameless little bunny says he's going to run away and his mother tells him she will follow him. As he plans to become various things to hide from her, she is equally imaginative in the ways she will find him.

There is a little of the stalker-mom in the mother bunny, but we're talking about (a) little kids and (b) bunnies. It is extraordinarily unlikely that the target age group of 0-3 is going to be freaked out by the idea that Mommy will do anything and go anywhere to keep you safe. That's actually a fairly comforting idea. It's the person who reads the book and the tone they use that makes the difference. Make "If you run away, I will run after you." sound like a threat and you've changed the entire sense of the book.

So it isn't the freaked out parents that make me two-star this book. It's actually the book itself. On the pages where there is text, the drawings are pleasant black and white drawings; where there is no text, the illustrations are almost all gaudily colored and badly drawn (with one exception, when the mother bunny is the tree that the baby bunny as a bird flies home to). The stark difference between these two styles just isn't attractive at all and, because a huge part of childrens' books is the illustrations, the board book edition of The Runaway Bunny just doesn't cut it.

  Runaway Fun!
Review created: 03/30/08

Margaret Wise Brown's genius is well displayed in this charming tale for small children. In our family, at least three generations of readers have treasured this book. After trying to assert its independence by taking dreamlike journeys in several directions, the bunny at last returns to its mother's welcoming arms. All's well that ends well. This is a wonderful story to share with little ones at bedtime ... or any time at all. Both the pictures and words weave a spell of warmth, tenderness and love.

I bought this book for new parents I know because it is one of the most touching books for children that I have ever read. I read it to my children who are grown now. You may remember Margaret Wise Brown as the author of "Goodnight Moon." That one is charming, but this one is better. Get the hardcover because the illustrations are lovely and so relative to the story.
