The music sound is too high in comparison with the voices, I have to play with the remote very often.

Love Charlton Heston movies. El Cid was a good epic. Heston did historic figures well. The film is one of his better films and better acted. Worth having his better films on dvd to be able to enjoy time and again.

  El Cid

It is a classic. It all about the famous Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar who fought the muslims in Spain. He was a real man, not a legeng like Arthur, and a figTer for cristianity and his king. I loved the movie and both Sofia Loren and Charlton Heston are incredible. As history goes, it is pretty much as it happenned, all the way until he dies and wins his last batle dead on top of his horse Babieca. It was great. The scenery in the movie is beautiful and over all a well done movie.

  El Cid (2008, DVD,)
Review created: 02/13/08

Undoubtedly more recent generations of movie lovers will initially find this 1961 film overly long and drawn out. But buffs familiar with Hollywood's Golden Era will appreciate this epic for its dynamic grandeur, realistic character development, proverbial plot and potent cinematography. Samuel Bronston hired Anthony Mann to direct Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren in the leads and moved his entire production to Spain in order to afford the huge sets, cast & crew that would manifest the ultimate heroic saga of the Middle Ages. This film is as rich in imagery and lifelong lessons as DeMille's "Ten Commandments." It is packed with powerful villains, cringing cowards, gorgeous damsels and worthy enemies. Above them all strides Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, a knight who has "the courage to be merciful and the wisdom to be just." For this and many more reasons, his enemies and friends alike call him, El Cid, the Lord. His is the kind of story that transcends time, becoming a legend of mythical proportions. Rodrigo's world is torn asunder by an endless, petty religious war. By bringing embittered antagonists together, El Cid teaches to Spain the very lessons in living we in the 21st century could learn. You've never seen such courage, such dedication to honor nor such battle scenes; and you never will again. The royal tournament/joust scene took two weeks and thousands of feet to film; the battle scenes required a whole regiment of Franco's army to man, and no cost was spared on sets, costumes and armor. Perhaps the greatest epic film composer, Miklos Rozsa (17 Academy Award nominations: 3 Oscars)produced one of the most hauntingly memorable scores for this film. If you liked Ben-Hur for its majesty and grandeur, you will love this movie, too. (Look for Lazarus, the leper at the well; legend claims he was a confirming angel, sent to test the Cid at his weakest moment.)

  EL CID
Review created: 02/02/08

If you have never seen it your in for a treat. One of five all time greats.
Nobleman Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (Charlton Heston) frees several Moorish foes captured in battle, incurring the lasting loyalty of their leader Moutamin (Douglas Wilmer), who calls him "El Cid." Returning to Burgos to marry Jimena Gormaz (Sophia Loren, dubbed 'Chimene' for English use), daughter of the King's champion Count Gormaz (Andrew Cruickshank), Rodrigo is branded a traitor by Count Ordóñez (Raf Vallone), a jealous rival for Chimene's hand. Rodrigo must defend his family's honor by slaying Count Gormaz, earning Chimene's lasting hatred. To square his family's good name, Rodrigo takes Gormaz' place in a trial by combat to determine the ownership of a disputed city. Made the new champion, Rodrigo tries to mentor the princes Alfonso and Sancho (John Fraser & Gary Raymond), and wins the hand of Chimene against her will. She enters a convent rather than stay with her father's killer, while Princess Urraca (Geneviève Page) encourages a rivalry between the princes. When the King dies the kingdom goes into disarray and Rodrigo is banished. He finds a brief happiness with Chimene but soon returns to help heal the kingdom's internal wounds, and to defend against the new Moorish threat represented by the fanatic Ben Yussef (Herbert Lom).
