This is a great family movie. Welcome back Disney to family films. No Swearing, no sex, nothing that was bad for my small children to see. However, There is a slight scary part when the dogs run in to a mean seal. My children loved it and so did momma and daddy. I laughed and I cried. This is one of these feel good movies the world needs more of. Thanks Disney to a family night movie on DVD! This is inspired by a true story. The cimaphotography is wonderful.

  Wonderful and Heart-Warming Movie

I really loved this movie! The acting was terrific, the storyline was great, and the love between a man and his dogs was inspiring. This was a great drama, that in places made me cry and really feel like I was there. I felt like this movie was very original and clean. The ending was a bit unexpected. It wished there was more to it. This wasn't a humorous, action packed, or terribly romantic movie...just a great heart-warming drama.

I DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START WITH THIS MOVIE, IT IS AWESOME FROM START TO FINISH! PAUL WALKER DID AN EXCELLENT JOB! I NORMALLY DO NOT GET UPSET IN MOVIES WHERE SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS TO ANIMALS, (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF MY DOG SKIP) I NEVER CRYED WHEN OLD YELLER DIED! BUT I WAS BALLING THROUGH THIS MOVIE. BUT BY THE END I WAS SMILING!!! YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE THE MOVIE TO KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT! THIS IS A MUST-HAVE MOVIE FOR YOUR COLLECTION!!!

  Eight Below- 2006

Eight Below is based on a true story that involves 8 sled dogs in the Antarctic and the guide who was forced to leave them stranded there.
The movie starts out strong with the acting and the dogs are a joy to watch with their different personalities and their very different interaction with the "humans" they have to work with.
Without giving too much away about the movie and what happens, I really enjoyed the movie for the most part. However, they went alittle too far in speculating about what happened with 2 of the dogs and even though the Leopard Seal scene was interesting to watch, I didn't buy it.
The different bird hunting scenes were very interesting and believable and were tastefully done.
Towards the end of the movie, you are really hoping that help comes soon for the dogs and during the movie, it lists how many days the dogs are out on their own.
This movie is set up for all ages, but if parents are allowing very young children to view, they may have to explain about the birds, they appear very real.
All in all the movie was very good and you get a sense of urgency what the guide is feeling and the hopeless and despair that he feels trying to get back to his best friends.

Eight Below, a great, funny at the beginning and sad movie all in one. Welcome to Antarctica, where if you go any more south, you'll fall off the planet! (Not really). Where eight dogs must fight the elements to stay alive till their owner can go back and get them. Inspired by the true story, this Disney film is worth the renting and for some, buying price. It is a great movie.

This is a laugh, cry, rub your hands together and hope for the best movie. For the 8 year olds and up crowd. This story chronicles the life of sled dogs and thier owner who was forced to leave them for a season to fend for themselves. Very good message for kids and parents alike of loyalty and the power of perseverance and love. Highly recommended family movie.

This is truly a heartwarming story. Definitely one of Disney's best yet. Anyone who is a dog or animal lover will love this movie.

The cast is also very well picked. Paul Walker and Jason Biggs give great performances. In my opinion this is Paul's best movie yet.

This movie was inspired by a true story, which makes it all the more beautiful. This story brought tears to my eyes, and also laughter at times (Jason Biggs character lifts up the drama with humorous comedy).

If you're a dog lover, you're sure to love this movie! But even if you don't especially like animals, you may enjoy the storyline. "Eight Below" was superbly cast with a great script. It has a pleasant blend of humor and touching affection, as well as extreme suspense and excitement. The plot is definately gripping, and the Arctic scenery is stunning! Awesome acting and excellent photography. The dogs are all absolutely gorgeous, you'll fall in love with them at first sight!
The story is about a man who, due to an accident, must leave his dogs in the cold Arctic weather and fly out by helicopter. Most of the movie is about his efforts to return to see if the dogs survived.
This is a gripping family film.

Excellent Movie for the Whole Family!

Disney does it again! This movie is based upon a true story. If you are a dog lover..this is a wonderful movie however....it got me teary eyed several times. No vulgar language, no sex, no really bad scary scenes. This is just a wonderful feel-good type of movie that the whole family can enjoy. You will laugh, get teary eyed, cheer....a must see, you will not be disappointed! Basically the story centers around 8 sled dogs that get left behind in Anarctica for several hundred days...they have to endure horrid cold temperatures, mother nature and other various obsticles in order to stay alive. The scientist that leaves them behind is sick that he had to do this and tries to find anyway he can to return and rescue them. When he finally returns several hundred days later...he is suprised to what he finds!

  A Recommended Family Movie!
Review created: 07/12/06

What a good movie! I was actually surprised that it was made by Disney. There was nothing objectionable about it. 8 Below stars Paul Walker (Fast and the Furious) and 8 beautiful Alaskan Malamute dogs that clearly stole the show. Jason Biggs (Americna Pie) also stars as Walkers' goofy sidekick. The movie is actually based on real events, and (like many things here in American) taken from a film made in Japan. There were some slow moments, and times that were just filler, but the film had respect for the beautiful scenery of Greenland and it had plenty of show time for the dogs. The dogs were wonderful actors, and there wasn't the awful voice over dubbing from Disney's last attempt at a sled dog movie "Snow Dogs" starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. These dogs were very intelligent and acted like real peopel would. Again, this is a real good movie and is great for both adults and children alike. Enjoy!

Be ready to cry if you love dogs

If you love dogs this is the movie for you. I saw the original which was made in the early 80's and is called Antartica. This one is a good version of it. I cried the whole movie as the lead dog's name is Maya and so is mine.
This story makes you see the leadership and friendship that goes on within dog herds. It is a sad, happy, moving, wonderful story, of how humans and animals really care for each other. Rent it, or buy it, I can tell you , you won't be disapointed.

  Dogs steal the show.
Review created: 06/22/06

The dogs are the best thing about this movie. They do make you fall in love with this movie even though the acting isn't anything special, however, Jason Biggs is pretty funny. As with all "inspired by real events" movies, it strays far from the real truth. It is based on the 1983 movie "Antartica", if you google it you can find out what REALLY happened. Even the timeline in the movie which they make look true is wrong. The dogs were actually left for LONGER than the movie states. Of course this is Disney and they have to make everything a little (or a lot) better than real life. That being said, this is a good movie that you will want to watch over and over.

Great Family Film as well as showing what an example of True Friendship can be. It truly hits home just how much caring can be and should be shown and not told.
The animals in this film were wonderfull and showed how close the bond is among them. To me it taught a lesson in following your True Self and remember to listen to your insyicts.

I saw the shorts of this movie back in January and tried to get hold of it from then. Couldn't wait to see it and was not disappointed when I finally did buy it(from Taiwan). I have the same breed of dog (Alaskan Malamute) so was very interested in it from that perspective, but was totally spun out by the movie. I have probably watched it about 6 times (and cried every time)and bought it as soon as it became available. You really won't be disappointed.

Family Movie About What "Family" Really Means
Review created: 08/13/06
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Eight Below rates a 5 because it has all the elements of a great movie--the inspirational characters, a moving story, an unchartered setting, suspence, even a little romance. The film contains no profanity, nothing dirty--so it is great for the whole family. Moms and Dads will enjoy this as much as children--and you'll probably want to talk about it for days. However there is one scary scene with a mean seal, so if the kids are small--cover their eyes! You might need a kleenex or two as well. We laughed and cried and hugged each other. It's a great family movie about what family really means.

Well-rounded Dysney movie with all the elements to please most if not all viewers, especially Huskies owners (yours truly included). Although no Oscar-winning acting here, the plot line unfurls at a pleasant, even rate. The unique qualities of the Huskies breed should be noticed. Before rushing out to adopt one, viewers should be aware that Huskies are not "good" house-pets in the conventional expectations; they are fiercely independent-minded albeit docile and wonderful dogs. Regrettably, the dvd special features barely mention about the Huskies, the real stars of this movie, and squander space away on the less interesting human actors and on the ho-hum behind-the-scene tidbits.

This is a Excellent film the way its really made most people don't know that you have to go through a survival school and pass it even to go to that area, But this one brings you back to the realistic endevour of the aniaml chain and lets you see what even a human would do if he was in that spot.
