Originating from lecture notes for Adare's writing classes and workshops, this work offers technical tips for keeping one's manuscript out of the slush pile, gleaned from 28 regional and national book and magazine editors. Part 1 briefly covers the basics for amateur writers, and Part 2 offers examples of queries, cover letters, fiction synopses, and nonfiction proposals. Unfortunately, Adare doesn't heed her own admonition to "watch for repetition." In each of her analyses, she has chosen to repeat most or all of an example in revised form (11 pages worth in one instance), rather than insert her brief, italicized comments in the margin of or embedded within the text of the original example. While there is valid advice here, most of it is already in print elsewhere, most notably in past and present editions of Writer's Market, which at least acknowledges electronic indexes and catalogs.
