Echoes in the Darkness by Joseph Wambaugh (1987, Paperback, Reissue)

As the jury foreman on Dr. Smith's civil trial, this book is inaccurate in many areas. Smith's conviction was overturned 6 yrs. later. During the civil trial, it was noted that the author paid the state trooper heading the investigation $50,000. Dr. Smith is portrayed less than accurately, and the Trooper was not the "hero". Knowing all the facts of this case, this book is not anywhere near "what happened" and should not be considered factual.

I am a Joseph Wambaugh fan and enjoy his fast paced, sardonic narrative. The story is based on a true case which makes it more interesting to me. The tale is replete with interesting characters and I think Wambaugh did an excellent job in his descriptions, especially of Dr. Jay Smith. Filled with intrigue, deception and murder, I recommend this terrific book.
