Should be mandatory reading for 60% of America

I'm sure my review will upset some readers, but this is just my honest opinion. Every single overweight and obese person should be forced to sit down and read all three books in the Eat This, Not That series. Our nation is one that way too often eats with emotion instead of logic and critical thinking about what we put into our bodies.
My wife and I constantly cook homemade meals and rarely (1-2 times a month) eat out at restaurants. We carefully select all foods that go into our cooking, insisting on organic whenever possible. Whenever I talk to people about how we cook, I usually get the same response: “I can't afford organic foods, its too expensive!” I find it odd that someone can't afford organic foods, but CAN afford a new iPod, iPhone, a pack of cigarettes every day and an SUV that gets 10 MPG.
I can say this because my wife and I both used to smoke. My wife used to weigh 350 and I was at 250. Now my wife is at 125 and I'm at 195. We no longer smoke and we also both now own 30 MPG or better Toyotas.
We both also stay abreast on the latest information on foods, and the Eat This, Not That series is world class information. Major food manufacturers DO NOT CARE about you or your health, they only care about taking money out of your pocket. You must educate yourself and bring up all your defenses and learn about what you are putting into your body.
Now, this does not mean you can't have a few cookies every once in a while. I am and will always be a cookie-addict. But its all about moderation and education.
What really upsets me most, however, is that I and my wife have to pay exorbitant health insurance coverage because so many out there simply can't take care of themselves. Those of us who take care of ourselves are being punished for those who cannot or will not. Our nation now teeters on 60% of the population being overweight or obese and diabetes is skyrocketing.
Please buy these books, borrow them from a friend, get them from the library and educate yourselves. You will be shocked at the information you learn in this series of books about the foods you eat.

  Super book Real Eye opener

I bought this book to help with a diet. I thought I understood what to buy but this book even shocked me, I didn't realize they put oil in that 90 second rice for the microwave asnd how much fat and calories that added to an otherwise healty product. This is a straight shooting book, easy to read and illustrated with pictures and explanation all the weay. This even explained what to avoid at the salad bar and what to limit in your diet. This book will be an invaluable resource in my diet and health plans.

I ADORE THE BOOK. I can't wait to save my money and purchase the rest in the series. Its full of information that someone can use in the store and small enough to fit inside a purse to take with you to the store to insure healthy inexpensive purchases are made.

This book provides the shortcuts for seeing items, so you don't have to spend time reading the labels when shopping. Easy read, and very informative as what we are really eating. At least, it makes you think twice!

It has wonderful alternative healthy eating substitues for the poorer choices we have made in the past. I recommend all of the books in this series.
It is like having your own dietician guiding your food choices.

Book every one should read and keep handy!

To the average American trying to lose weight, the supermarket can be a scary place. We usually dread the weekly trip there, thanks to the temptations in every aisle and the hours we seem to spend perusing overwhelming nutrition facts.

But the "Eat This, Not That" guys have officially taken the guess-work (and the candy-aisle scariness!) out of grocery shopping. The easy-to-digest spreads with colorful photos and info boxes make decisions simple so you can feed your family the right stuff.

In this book, every page has valuable content for anyone who shops at a supermarket -- so much, in fact, it's tough to determine just what to highlight in this review. Every time I flip through the book I come across useful, surprising information. For example, right now I'll randomly open it a few times and learn why....

1) Fruit Loops are better for you than Apple Cinnamon Cheerios...

2) Regular Cheerios is a better choice than Smart Start...

3) Regular Quick 1 minute Quaker Oats is healthier than Quaker's Simple Harvest Multigrain hot cereal...

4) Dole pineapple cups are more nutritious than Dole mixed fruit cups...

5) Del Monte pear halves beat Del Monte sliced pears...

I could go on forever.

By the way, not all the pages are side-by-side product comparisons. One spread, titled "The Meat Matrix," compares the nutritional value of a variety of meats, everything from pork to ostrich. Another, "The Perfect Refrigerator," displays a perfectly stocked healthy fridge. My daughter was especially interested in a spread titled "The Snack Matrix," which shows which combination of snack items (fruit, peanut butter, cottage cheese) mix well together for both nutrition and taste. Another section discusses how to store fresh fruit and produce and explains why fresh food is better for you.

Healthy Foods vs. Unhealthy Foods Fun Comparison Book
Review created: 04/14/09

Love the layout - lots of pictures with just enough text about each item listing why it's either healthy or not. So many books like this are just too wordy and dry and take too much time to read. Love how the page on the left is the healthy that then compares to the unhealthier on the right side. I like that it's not a coffee table size book. That said, I do wish the print was just a tiny bigger, although I realize that would mean the book would have to be a bit larger. Also wish they could cover more brands, even if that would mean making some product topics more than the one page on left, one on right. Would love to see a Weight Watchers version, with the points for each item factored in, whether good or bad. I liked this so much I am going to buy the other two, Eat This Not That (the original one comparing restaurant items) and Eat This Not That for Kids, even though I don't have any! I also like that they may have a name brand offering on the "Eat This" side, yet another item from that same brand may also be on the "Not That" side. Very honest.

It was a wake up call. Some things that I thought were the healthier choice were
not. It is helping to make better choices instead of going with what I always pick out to buy. This is a great tool.

Eat This Not Called Supermarket Guide

The book is a disappointment. Certainly not worth the money. It tells you to buy this brand not that brand. Ok if money was no object. Still, the book is a waste of money. If you bought this book you might get 25 cents worth of advice from it.

A must read, great dieting book!
Review created: 08/16/09

My wife got me this book as a gift and I was immediately impressed! The author did a great job on this book and the best thing is the pictures! I really enjoyed the eat this and not that pages in the book. There are great pictures along with captions explaining all the choices in food.

This is the kind of book you could even take to the grocery store with you. I probably will be buying the other books also. The book is definitely not boring as usual diet books and gives great information. Highly recommended!
