East of Eden is in My Top 10

I have to admit, the first time I read this book was in college. It was an assigned book for an intro English lit class. When I picked it up at the book store, I took one look at it, and I wanted to chuck it as far away from me as possible. What could I possibly like in a book written in the 50's? That is what I thought. Boy was I wrong.

This is now one of my all time favorite books. It weaves together the Biblical story of Cain and Abel, and the history of California's Salinas Valley. Biblical references aside, this is an all around great story. Even if you are not Christian, the book is still a worthwhile buy. The plots in this book are enough to hold any readers interest, Christian or not. It is a tale of a family. An American family, with problems just like everyone else.

Now, if you are Christian and you have at least heard of the story of Cain and Abel, this story is a great way to learn a little more Cain and Abel. Having read most of the Bible myself, I have to say it can be somewhat confusing at times. East of Eden is written in a style very accessible to the average reader.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read and loves a good story, with trials and tribulation within an average American family. And, a side note, to anyone that reads their books more than once. I would suggest the hardcover editions because they last so much longer.
