Matthew Sweet's second album found him on a new label. Where his debut (INSIDE) featured him doing most of the playing himself, this time out he collaborates with producer Fred Maher.
A guitarist's delight, EARTH features the bracing fretwork of Richard Lloyd, Robert Quine, and Gary Lucas. The edginess they bring to the proceedings elevates the album from mere prettiness into more emotionally complex textures and settings. There are also lush background vocals courtesy of the band Trip Shakespeare, which add breadth without over-sweetening (no pun intended). "Wind and the Sun" is just one of this album's dazzling songs. All of the characteristics of Sweet's writing, which would find their widest audience with his 1991 album GIRLFRIEND two years later, are present here (along with many of the same players).
