THE EARLY YEARS-PART ONE is a best-of Bocephus collection derived from Hank Williams Jr.'s mid-'70s work. It's a lot less rowdy than you might expect. At the time, Nashville was in the throes of one of its cyclical flirtations with crossover appeal. Consequently, there's a lot of stuff here that, as they say, doth protest the smell of cow manure too much.
Shimmering electric pianos and female choruses abound. Some selections have no discernable connection with country music as anyone knows it. "All By Myself," for example, was written by the good ole' boy team of Eric Carmen and Sergei Rachmaninoff. But when the material is good--a cover of his father's "You're Gonna Change (Or I'm Gonna Leave)," a honky-tonker like "Mobile Boogie"--Junior makes a believer out of you.
