These twelve songs were culled from sessions Woody Guthrie recorded in 1944 for Moses Asch, founder of Folkways Records. Guthrie accompanies himself on guitar here, and is joined by Cisco Houston on harmonies and occasional guitar and mandolin, and Sonny Terry on harmonica. Guthrie was in his early thirties at the time of these recordings, and these sessions find him full of confidence about his songs and presentation.
His major themes are already well articulated: these are songs filled with folks trying to get by in the face of changing times, poor working conditions and bad fortune. The recordings are remarkable both for their seeming effortlessness, as well as the mammoth shadow they cast over the second half of the century. The roots of the folk movement are heard here, as are the some of the threads that subsequently braided themselves into rock & roll.

Editorial Reviews
3 Stars (out of 5) - ...folk and rock's equivalent of cave paintings....the place where all the fine art, hi-tech modern stuff started....classic songs...still sound easy and weigh heavy...
Q (09/01/1996)

The godfather as seminal folkie on a `sonically cleansed' reissue of a 1961 compilation of a dozen mid-'40s recordings, nine or so famed for good reason....a fine how-de-doo. - Rating: A-
