Earl's Book Revised After Almost 40 Years

After years of having to endure typos, tiny numbers in the tab, and the numbers being on the spaces, the Hal Leonard Corporation has acquired the publishing rights to Earl's book and revised it. A CD is available, or you can buy just the book.
Improvements include more songs, updated lessons, bigger type and some updated pictures. New songs added from Earl's solo albums, the Earl Scruggs Revue and John McEuen. The new songs: American Made-World Played, Bleeker Street Rag, Broad River, Carolina Traveler, Carolina Boogie, Instrumental in D Minor, Pedal to the Metal, Pick Along, Roller Coaster, Silver Eagle, Station Break, String Bender and Train Number Forty-Five. Another nice new feature is the specific break and what album the transcription is from. One of the complaints about the old book was that it was hard to figure out exactly which version you were trying to play. An interesting side note is that all mention of Bill Keith has been eliminated, even though Keith did the original transcribing and was Earl's partner in the Keith-Scruggs tuners, now just called Keith tuners.
Should you buy this book? If you're new to the banjo, and/or you don't own the original, it's a must have. If you do own the original, it's still an interesting book to have and I'd strongly recommend it. The new songs alone would make it worth having, and if you didn't have the record or tape that came with the original, it's kind of nice to have a CD. The only problem with the CD is that it does not contain full songs, except for the version of Cripple Creek. Jed Clampett, Foggy Mountain Breakdown and Flint Hill Special only have examples of Earl's techniques. So overall, I'd rate the book as excellent as it still includes the section on building a banjo, picking exercises, Scruggs tuners and all of the important features that first book had.
