The Eagle and the Raven by James A. Michener
Review created: 03/27/08

This book was recommended to me by a friend, who happens to teach history. We have similar likes and he told me not to miss this title.

I love the way Mr. Michener unfurls the life comparisons of Sam Houston and Santa Anna. One chapter on Houston and the next one on Santa Anna.

He gives the reader the good and the bad of each personage.

This book is not as big as one expects from James Michener. So, even though this may be a quick read it doesn't skimp on historical detail.

I was astonished at how little I knew of Sam Houston and/or Santa Anna. My thoughts were shorter than any Reader's Digest condensed story.

Not anymore!

This book has awakened a thirst for more knowledge about this era and about Mexico and Texas.

My friend has made me hungry.

This book turned out to be an appetizer.

Maybe not James A. Michener's Finest work, but very reflective of the approach, style and spirit of his books. Basically, this book is Michener's research and writing about the lives of General Sam Houston and General Santa Anna, which was too much detail for his epic book TEXAS. I quested for this book to complete my experience of reading TEXAS and was not disappointed.
