The full title of this album, EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENT, gives one a good idea of the themes contained herein. The album kicks off with a spoken word piece setting a scene of apocalypse and the end of civilization as we know it. This rather fatalistic prediction is given life on the title tune, but many of the songs here are concerned with less weighty topics. Janet Jackson guests on the propulsive, sexy "What's It Gonna Be," a tune with more carnal concerns. Ozzy Osbourne even turns up for the rallying battle cry of "This Means War!," which is based around Black Sabbath's classic "Iron Man." As always, Busta knocks out some impressively tongue-twisting rhymes over unpredictable, off-kilter beats, in his patented, unrelenting style. Both fearsome and fun, E.L.E. is prime Busta.

Editorial Reviews
3 1/2 (out of 5) ... Hard, gut-punching beats anchor the disc. Electro bleeps, computer-game effects, a harpsichord, Asian-music flourishes, thick and funky bass lines, and string-laded samples from old movies are sparingly, precisely doled out on top...
Rolling Stone (01/21/1999)

...EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENT is the product of an artist who has mastered his medium and taken us a little closer to a new reality...
The Source (03/01/1999)

...With full control of his artistic devices and inspired by the acclaim garnered for his explosive lyrics...Busta landed feet first into the cameo king slot....Busta's latest...relies on the promise that Earth will soon shatter to bloody bits...
Vibe (02/01/1999)

Rhymes continues to be the Jackie Chan of hip-hop, karate-chopping up mountains of rhymes with a maniacal fervor (and a charming, cartoonish persona). He may be one of the few rappers who can make tall tales of sex and success seem funny... - Rating: B
Entertainment Weekly (01/15/1999)

4 out of 4 - ...impressively tongue-twisting rhymes over unpredictable but body-grabbing beats....fearsome and off the hook, E.L.E. is Busta Rhymes at his best.
Urban Latino (02/01/1999)

4 out of 5 - ...Busta, rasping like only he can, takes beats which owe much to the cut-ups of jungle and layers them with the rhymes which walk on the dark side...
