Album Notes Personnel: Sondre Lerche (vocals, guitar); Jorgen Traeen (percussion); Faces Down Quartet. Recording information: Duper Studio, Norway, Sweden (2005). Norwegian indie-pop sensation Sondre Lerche moves in a new direction for his 2006 release DUPER SESSIONS. Devoted fans looking for more of the well-crafted chamber pop of TWO WAY MONOLOGUE might be taken aback to know that DUPER SESSIONS is light, swinging, and very jazzy. Yet all the hallmarks of Lerche's work are present: tight songcraft, clever lyrics, memorable melodies. Lerche's clear croon is well-suited to the style, as songs like "(You Knocked Me) Off My Feet" prove, while the less overtly jazz-oriented material is invigorated by the distinctive instrumentation and arrangements. Ever the experimentalist, Lerche turns in jazzy renditions of tunes by Prefab Sprout and Elvis Costello, so that his listeners--though relaxed by the album's smooth swing--are playfully kept on their toes.
Editorial Reviews Here, he's a crooner, taking jazzy pop to dizzying heights of charm. Lerche's fresh-faced romanticism and a simple -- and occasionally simplistic -- approach to ensemble work comes from these tracks being laid down almost entirely love and unrehearsed. Magnet
