Album Notes The cover info of DUOLOGUE is something of a misnomer since Lee Wiley and pianist Ellis Larkins do not actually perform together here. Instead, this Black Lion reissue couples the 1954 10" LP LEE WILEY SINGS RODGERS & HART with a rare four-track EP of Ellis Larkin's solo piano. Wiley is actually accompanied by the Ruby Braff Quartet on this set. (The cornetist and Larkins went on to record together for quite a few duo albums themselves.) Though she had a somewhat spotty career, Lee Wiley is among the greatest American singers, one who influenced such giants as Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. In his definitive book, JAZZ SINGING, the writer Will Friedwald describes the "naked" quality of her singing, the honesty and sense of lived experience that she brought to the lyrics she sang. But unlike other theatrically inclined cabaret artists, Wiley was also a jazz singer who added a touch of pure musical value to all her interpretations. This CD reissue was mastered straight off the vinyl so you can hear all the cracks and pops--which might increase its nostalgia value for some.
