  The whole ball of spice

On the whole it is wonderful to have both versions of this classic movie adaptation of the 20th century true epic and visionary writer - Frank Herbert.
The hard aluminum case is more show than tell and there isnt much to the extras either in the case or on the disk. This set is for those of use who have hunted and suffered through previous version VHS and tv captured attempts
at seeing the legendary Alan Smithee version. Though now with much hind sight and countless viewings of both version over the years the long version is sorely lacking in editing transitions and feels choppier and choppier in story telling the more I watch it.

But the true Dune devotees must have this as dvd navigation , while not as spectacular as guild navigators is a blessing and fitting for a movie of such scope and import.

The "documentaries" are brief, old and unsatisfying to anyone looking for new insights or discuss of the movies own history, notoriety or the historical context of the book, the man(Herbert) and current events.

In short:: This set is long on movie but too short on extras.

More information on a flawed movie...
Review created: 04/02/08

Yes, I rated it good, but, overall this is a flawed movie, folks. I never saw the original in the theatre, but I rented it and enjoyed the visuals and cast. The story followed the book for the most part, but it seemed rushed and disjointed in others. I purchased a VHS "extended" edition from a Sci-Fi con that contained about 20 minutes more detail than this one(more narration, Baron V killing a teenager, etc.), but again more detail just provides more footage that did not make the original release. This version contains the backstory via narration and original storyboards, and does help launch you into the beginning. It also contains the water of life being spewed by a young worm. I despise the fact that the film uses the same approach shot of the same ship over and over. BOTTOM LINE: if you are Dune fan, you will enjoy the extra footage. If you have not seen it before, rent it and make up your mind if your library really needs this one.

  More Dune is better

Being an avid Frank Herbert fan, I looked forward to seeing the Dune movie. Nothing can match ones own imagination when reading; however, both the original and extended versions did present the viewer with a fairly vivid portrayal of the classic Dune saga, part one. I enjoyed the overall movie realizing that not all events and story lines could be crammed into a limited amount of time.

This movie is the extended version so a lot more footage was added. There is a man doing the narrating for the movie. I liked the Princess doing the narrating in the other version. Some of the new scenes look kind of goofy but they add to the story. I give it a thumbs up.

  Dune Extended Edition

This is a good version as I remember Dune when it came out. There is one very rare version where when Allia(spelling?) killed the Baron she is holding a bloody knife surounded by the gravitational circular symbol with 12 points connected by lines of gravitation. That one I saw at Fox Theater in Palos Verdes, I have never seen it sold publicly. This version is just fine and a little better computer from now a days or a good video card is in order to get all the colors.

  Still A Debacle ... 23 Years Later
Review created: 12/25/07(updated 04/22/08)
by:
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If "Lord of the Rings" is the pinnacle of fantasy, then "Dune" is surely the apex of science fiction. With the success of "Star Wars," "Star Trek" and "Moonraker," adapting Frank Herbert's masterpiece in 1984 must have seemed like a great idea. Instead, David Lynch crafted a substandard debacle while wrestling with studio bosses in a fight that later became reminiscent of "Blade Runner." "Dune" bombed at the box office and was reviled by fans of the book, who found it impossible to cram Herbert's sprawling universe into two hours and 17 minutes.

Not much has changed in two decades. Even in an extended version, "Dune" is still awful—a fact that Lynch himself has admitted in several interviews. The film's pacing is terrible, focusing on the first few chapters for 90 minutes and compressing nearly 400 pages into the movie's last half hour. Plus, decisions were made concerning the art direction that defy logic: black stillsuits anyone?

Still, in cinematic terms, the film does possess a few bright points. Twenty years on, the visual effects are still stunning. Miniatures and models will always hold up better than CGI, and this is certainly true with "Dune." The sandworms and spice trawlers look as real today as they did in 1984. The score by 80s band Toto still fits the film's trippy feel, and Kyle MacLachlan is superbly cast as Paul Atreides, a young man who may or may not be the messiah of the universe.

Do these things save the film from utter disaster? No, but even in failure, David Lynch proves himself to be a visionary filmmaker.

Always been a favorite of mine. Though some may think it longwinded and boring, for the time period, the special effects and music background were a nice meld.

A disgrace to the novel. Poor casting of characters all around. Left out key plots in the novel. If you are going to see this movie for the first time, don't.

Dune - Extended Version (DVD, 2006, Extended Version)
Review created: 12/07/09

In a very distant future human beings have evolved, and thinking machines have been outlawed due to a horrible war with them some time back. Humans have instead developed their minds to amazing capacities. Out of this evolution several different camps have emerged, all with their own peculiar quirks and skills. Each group plays a role or function: spiritual, mental, or as navigators for space travel. They all need the spice "melange" in some way, shape, or form to perform their duties. The spice is essentially an addictive psychotropic drug which expands consciousness to extreme levels. It is the sole natural resource that fuels the entire existence of civilization.

The known universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor, with royal families ruling each planet. There is one planet that is important above all others, because it is the sole source of spice in the Universe: Arrakis, also known as Dune. The Emperor has sent Duke Leto Atreides to the planet to govern the spice production, because he is a trustworthy leader. But the Emperor has actually set an elaborate trap for the House of Atreides, for he fears their growing power and their expanded army, trained in a new sonic-based form of battle called the "Weirding Way." He has made a backroom deal to allow the evil House Harkonnen to attack House Atreides, and wipe them out on Arrakis.

To throw a wrench into all this political intrigue, the Duke has a son who should have never been born. His concubine, Lady Jessica, provided him with a son named Paul. This was against the wishes of her religious order, the Bene Gesserit, a mystical group of women who are engaged in selective breeding. Their goal is to produce a messiah who will cleanse the universe. Paul just might be this mythical figure, but he was unexpected, as Jessica was mandated to bear only daughters.

A group of native people called the Fremen live on the planet Arrakis. They are mysterious figures who work closely with the spice, and who have developed a religion around the substance and the giant worms that help produce it. After the attack on House Atreides, Paul and Jessica escape to the desert to live with them. The Fremen have been waiting for a messiah to come; Paul just may be him. He teaches the Fremen the "Weirding Way" in battle, and prepares them for an all-out civil war that will make them the sole controllers of the spice and Arrakis. Will their Holy War (or "Jihad") cleanse the Universe? Is Paul destined to be a messiah?

**Dune is a great fiction move witch a saw when I was really young and loved it up to the date. The effects are really good for the time that it was made. Dune is a pretty politically and religiously complicated move its a hole seres of books sow theirs stories within stories and this is why I loved this extended version of the move it explains allot better. also the tin box is beautiful THIS is the item for any SYFY collector.**

  Ah... now we're getting somewhere...
Review created: 12/01/09

While I enjoy this "extended version" it still is not what I'm looking for with dune which would be "Dune, a Directors Cut". I want a version wherein we get to see ALL of David Lynch's unique take and vision for Dune and it's mythos. That version of Dune has not and will never be released thanks to the shortsightedness of Mr. Delaurentis and the persnickityness of Mr. Lynch. Can't says I blame either though. Dune as it was released was one of the biggest flops in movie history, on the other hand the final version was so butchered by the producers Lynch refuses to have his name associated with it. As a result we get this "Extended Version" that, while better than the original, is not Lynch's complete vision. More's the pity, however, as my Daddy used to say, "a fast penny beats a slow dollar", so buying this DVD, while not perfect, is better than nuthin'.

Still not the way the book was written, but a lot more understandable than the theater version.

  DUNE: Worms?
Review created: 09/10/09

I Love this film. Now I have the extended version too. This is a different kind of film. The special effects like the space ships are not what most other films seem to show as spaceships. The story has many references to earth realities of the present day. It's kinda weird in places like the way Alia(?) speaks to the Baron in the end or the creature in the spaceship who folds space and needs the "spice". The spice itself is weird. Alot of this movie doesn't make sense in our reality but I guess that's to be expected. The main characters aren't really very smart although they're supposed to be. The Lady Jessica is BEAUTIFUL!!! HOT!!! The movie is worth it just to see her! Sting is?
Well I don't really know. They could have come up with a better actor.
Overall it's a lot of fun.

My husband really wanted this and was blown away by the extended version. The movie, to him, was fantastic and it brought back old memories of childhood. I chose to buy it on ebay because I trust the sellers and knew we could find a good deal. The DVD was flawless as described and shipped in a timely manner. This was our first time buying a DVD on ebay and we loved the experience and will do it again.

The animated intro adds insite into the background. There is also a narration that explains what you might have missed. The movie is all star and is visually better than the newer mini series. Dune is a long book and artistic license has been taken this is still an excellent stand alone movie.

  Dune, theatrical and extended versions
Review created: 07/17/09

If you have read Dune and are familiar with the details of the story plot, the movie is excellent. Anyone who has not read the story may find the movie to be daunting or confusing.
Anyone not familiar with the story would likely find the prologue of the extended version better at explaining the details, though it still leaves gaps - and I find it somewhat cartoonish.
I'm a fan, I have three copies (one to watch and two in reserve), so I am not saying not to buy the movie, only that if you have not read the book you may be disappointed with the movie.
If you liked the book, you will like the movie.

I enjoy that both versions are on the one disk. The case looks really nice and is durable. The movie is a must see. If you are looking to own it then this is the version you want. The bonus features are extremely interesting and you truly get a sense of what scope the studio intended for the film. Too bad Lynch was denied his cut. Good film never the less.
