Duma Key by Stephen King (2008, Hardcover)

King has written dozens of #1 bestsellers, some unforgettable and others forgettable, but with this new horror story I think he may be back on track like years before! This book takes on new ground for Mr. King. Hope to see a movie out of it.
The book explores an eerie stretch of Florida coast where Edgar Freemantle has come to build his life after an accident that cost him his arm and head injuries that leave him prone to uncontrollable rages and memory lapses. He ends up in Duma Key only because his Dr. felt he needed a change of place, a geographical cure. Edgar hopes that while here in Duma Key he can pick up the painting he use to love in his younger years. What he discovers, is that his talent is more powerful than he remembered. By that, it means that the things he paints become real! He also discovers that if he removes something from a painting, it will disappear in real life. Even people. He finally realizes that his newfound abilities are somehow tied to his elderly landlady, Elizabeth, but when the ghost of her past begin to appear, the real truth about his talent becomes quite terrifying. Now he must deal with the dark side of his talent.

Another of King's wonderful tales of horror, right out of the same box of tricks he pulled some of his greatest stuff from. After an accident that severly disables him he moves to Duma Key in Florida where he takes up painting and finds out that his paintings have the ability of coming true. Without giving too much away, I think this would be a very good book for any King fan, especially a vintage King reader.

The problem I usually have with Stephen King novels is that he writes himself into a corner. The endings usually have to be so horrific and complicated as to be totally unbelievable and unenjoyable -- instead of just far-fetched.

This book, however,contained two really great characters who were fully developed by King -- and the ending was not so terribly ridiculous.

Had almost given up reading Stephen King -- but I am very happy I gave him one more try!

I just started to read this book. I have not ever read a bad Stephen King book. There were more that held my inserest more than others. I am a die-hard Stephen King fan and will read any of his books. He is a great author with a great imagination. I am excited to really get into this book.

As a huge Stephen King fan, it was never an issue that I would buy this latest work. I think King's accident is reflected in this book with his protagonist, Edgar. The book is a slower paced read (think Insomnia) and wasn't the thriller I had hoped for. It is still well written but maybe King has lost some of his spook factor.

Really original book...I used to love Stephen
king when I was younger and recently wanted to give his work another shot. I am glad I did. I read this book in three days. Could not put it down. It was creepy without being just blood and gore. How the main character comes to terms with his disfigurement shows just how strong the human spirit can be. The friendships that are formed bring a quick smile. I like books that make you cry and laugh. Such a great buy and a great purchase!

Engrossing, a good read, recommended for all King fans.

I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I am a big fan of Stephen King. I am trying to get at least every book that I haven't read by him so I can read them. I rate it as Excellent, because there has only been 2 books of his that I didn't love.

I would rather spend the time having the collywobbles... this book just goes on and on and on and on and on... just tell the story and stop with the filler crap! The book is like 200 pages tooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long!
Stick to the story stop going off on a chapter (example) as to why someone wears bobby bins as opposed to clips... it was so boring... it became confussing and stupid.

I decided to buy it because it is a Stephen King new release, I have all of his books and I wanted to add it to my collection. I enjoyed it very much and even though I am employed full time, I still finished it in 2 days. It is not a horror book, but it is full of imagination, very descriptive and a very fast read. It keeps you interested in the story and pulls you into the book as if you were there. I highly recommend it and believe that anyone who reads it enjoys it as much as I did.

Like every other King novel, this novel had me deeply engrossed from the beginning. Worth it's weight in gold. I would definitely recommend this to any Steohen King or horror fan.

I have been a big fan of Stephen King, but haven't enjoyed his more recent books. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I began reading this. The descriptions of the characters and the surroundings make one feel like they are written into the storyline themselves. This fast paced story is suspenseful and thrilling - I truly think that any fan of his would like this book.

I'm a big SK fan, but I have not loved every single book he's written. This was a good one, it's a big one (600 pages), but he manages to keep you interested and entertained the entire book. I don't care how he does it, just as long as he keeps on doing it.

I actually bought this book as a gift for my boyfriend, but he read it and told me it was very good. And he is a collector of Stephen King and he said this is one of his better books in his opinion.

The book was good. I would'nt say one of his best ones but definitely readable. The condition of the book was excellent, like new. I bought it on ebay because the price at the local bookstore was too high. I got it at a fraction of its retail cost

I am a diehard Stephen King fan, so my review might be a little biased. I'm not finished with the book, I've got about 50 pages left to go, but I've gotten the general idea and I think anyone could pick this book up and enjoy it, regardless if you've been into SK books before.

At first I didn't like how in the first chapter the main character's life falls apart, I thought it gave the story an immediately negative tone that I didn’t understand that because it wasn't so much a scary feeling, but a sad one. If you feel this way too I urge you to keep reading. You'll find out why it’s necessary to start off on such a violent and sad beginning once you get near the end. Like all of SK's post-millennia work, the intricacy of the story will capture and amaze you. And, most importantly, give you a good scare.

I decided to buy it because I ran out of time trying to get it from the library. I liked it so much I decided to buy it!
