Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition (PC Games)
Review created: 09/04/09

Duke Nukem 3D is a first-person shooter computer game developed by 3D Realms and published by Apogee Software. It was released on January 29, 1996 for the PC. It is a sequel to the platform games Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem II published by Apogee. An expansion pack, Plutonium Pak, was released in November 1996.

Duke Nukem 3D features the adventures of the titular macho Duke Nukem (voiced by Jon St. John), who fights back an alien invasion on Earth.

Reception of Duke Nukem 3D has been largely positive. Reviewers praised the interactivity of the environment and the humor within the game. However, the game's erotic elements and portrayal of women have incited controversy.

Various spin-offs and modifications to the original Duke Nukem 3D were produced in the following years of the game's initial launch.

Plutonium PAK/Atomic Edition: The Atomic Edition of Duke Nukem 3D was released in November 1996, and contained the original 3 episode game as well as a new eleven-level fourth episode. The Plutonium PAK was also released as an upgrade package to convert the original release of Duke Nukem 3D (v1.3d) to the new Atomic Edition (v1.4, later patched to v1.5). It introduces new enemies, bosses, weapons, and changes to the script to make it easier to mod. Finally, the player can set up a multiplayer against CPU bots.

Duke Nukem 3d Atomic Edition CD is Incompatible
Review created: 08/20/09

This CD works only on a DOS operating system. I bought this as a treat, having owned the Manhatten Project CD. When item arrived it only went to windows media player 11 and played a brief 5+ minute melody. Vists to 3D Realms website for download patches came up empty, as did many pages of search engines + microsoft had nothing compatible. In my searches I found evidence that this was not for any windows or Mac operating systems and only worked in DOS. I do not know a soul who uses DOS based systems. Failure by seller to mention DOS Compatiblity and as a PC game led me to believe it would work on my advanced gaming graphics. I spent no less than 8-12 hours trying to locate technical support. The seller refered me to a DOS download that in my opinion was questionable to my operating system security. Shipping and handling was short of $20. Seller offered me $3 refund. Beware of these old outdated games on the internet, because it is my opinion the sellers are purchasing them for pennies on the dollar?, and auctioning them with schetchy information, i.e. not mentioning the DOS requirement. If, like me, you own an XP or Vista, Duke Nukem 3D Atomic will not work on your operating system unless you download programs from unknown sites. For the cost of your system this is not worth the risk. Buyer beware of all video games unless you have software from Playstation and X-Box or other game software from many companies. If the game is described as DOS, Play Station or X Box, make sure you have the software. This transaction was a very unpleasant experience in human relations and I am very disappointed with the outcome.

  Duke Nukem Atomic PC

The reason I didnt give this game a 5/5 is because it does not have any music when you play it. It just has sound effects. Unlike the PS1 version which has music.
What I like about it is- The last episode it has, it is different than the one from the PS1 version. Has good graphics for a 1997 game. Good Control, and its a funny game cause Duke Nukem says funny lines every time you Explode a Alien to pieces with Pipe Bombs or other explosives.

...inspired me to keep playing this game, due to the advange of free multiplayer buddies. Not only that, but for a 1st person shooter, what was noticeably different from Doom was the platforms could be slanted like a ramp. I know the game Descent had that, but was that considered 1st person shooter? Probably not because your in spaceship.

Don't forget that platforms could be put on top of each other like a two story building, believeably the first game to do that.

This is a great game. It holds up quite well despite its age. And if you download the High Definition Graphics pack from duke4.net it even looks and plays even better. Even with Window XP!
