Dark, intimate, and hushed both in name and delivery, A Whisper in the Noise make the kind of solemn, orchestra-kissed minimalist rock that fellow Minnesotans Low have championed and that the late Elliott Smith probably dreamed of making in his bleakest moments. DRY LAND, the band's third album, is a thing of rare, delicate beauty and fleeting grace. "Go Now" is a hymn of angelic vocals and guitar strummed like the slow lapping of water, and "You, the Orphan" spits shimmery sparks of piano over a bass heartbeat. Even the comparative discord of rocker "Armament" retains the band's austere mystery.
