I saw other movies with chinese subtitles that cost less. This is a direct copy of the original movie. The others were cheaper, but I would much rather have the real version, not a foriegn-made version. This movie was quite popular when it came out, and very well done for the 1930's. I highly recommend this version.

It is a excellent must have movie. Great historical story and splendid cinematography. Its one of Fonda's best roles since Grapes of Wrath.

  Outstanding Revolutionary War movie

This one stars Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert. It's the story of a young America and a couple who wed and head for the beautiful Mohawk Valley to start their lives. Among the cast are also Edna Mae Oliver and Ward Bond. You may even recognize some lesser lights such as the Protestant Preacher from the movie "The Quiet Man" and another little fellow who absolutely should have played a hobbit.

Henry Fonda is at his best in this one. You can see "Grapes of Wrath" level acting and "every man is a hero in his own way" in this one. Ward Bond is at his best playing Adam. Edna Mae Oliver is one of a kind. Claudette Colbert shines as the pampered colonial girl from New York State who faces the hardship, testing and joy of being a colonial settler's wife.

Great for 4th of July and Thanksgiving family viewing.

If you like old time story telling this is a good addition to any DVD collection. Henry Fonda is young and handsome. He makes you believe his story. The trials and hardships of the day are very clear. You want to reach out and help this young couple just starting out in marriage. Aside from being a good family film the story line is good and simple.

This is an average movie. I feel that Henry Fonda was lacking. His performance was weak, not like his performance in "Fort Apache". I felt that the script skipped around too much, making for a poor film.

  Drums Along the Mohawk
Review created: 12/10/07

The main selling point of Drums Along the Mohawk for me at least, is the director, John Ford. He's the reason I bought it and the big reason for watching it more than once. Drums Along the Mohawk is the third in a string of wonderful films Ford directed from 1939 unril the beginning of the war. It's his first film in color and for a director with such a great visual sense that alone is a reason for viewing it more than once. Another big reason is that Drums Along the Mohawk is an exciting movie and a great entertainment. Finally, unlike a previous reviewer, I don't believe that the lack of Oscar victories means much so far as the quality of a film. There's many Oscar winners that are forgotten today while overlooked pictures from the same year are loved and enjoyed and will be remembered as long as people watch movies. Reason enough to plunk down a couple of dollars for something as well done as Drums Along the Mohawk.
