Nestled near the hallowed halls of Harvard University lies a demented little stoner-pop outfit known as Drug Rug, led by lovers Sarah Cronin and Thomas Allen. Their self-titled effort infuses the streamlined sounds of their classically canonized influences (Beatles, girl groups, etc.) with an inspired dose of contemporary off-kilter grit. DRUG RUG is, at its essence, the dirt under the fingernails of the albums that inspired it. By veering from the creepily cutesy minimalism of "Lie Lie Lie" to the nearly pastoral "The Sound Alone," Cronin and Allen have spun subversively engaging gold out of an otherwise tried-and-true formula.
