This may sound weird, but I remembered seeing this movie when I was young and the part with the virgin who rips the skin off her hands to escape the dragon only to get fried anyway, it was seared into my memory. Lately we have been on a dragon movie kick and I kept looking up Dragon's lair because that is what I thought the title was. I couldn't find it at the local movie places even after I found the title. Long story short it is worth the trouble, the special effects are awesome for an 80's movie and the scenery is beautiful. One of my all-time favorite movies, great storyline and I love the Hodge character the best.

For a film of its age, Dragonslayer holds up well. It's more adult than one might expect, and I'm surprised it got a PG rating (there's some pretty graphic nasty stuff), but it is fast-moving, well-plotted and well-acted. The effects are remarkably good for the period. I bought it because I saw it long ago, and had recently watched "Dragonheart".

I had seen this one befor, and loved it. Wanted it to add to my dragon movie collection. Was not in the least disappointed. Takes place at the end of the Magik era. Great movie for watching and getting away from the day to day world. The fantasy world is a great vacation when you get to slay dragons and save damsels in distress.

Dragonslayer not just another dragon movie
Review created: 02/09/07

Dragonslayer is one of those classic Action/Adventure/Fantasy movies. The movie starts where a kingdom is sacrificing females to a dragon so that the dragon will not destroy them. The village people then go looking for a dragon slayer to rid themselves of the dragon.
Dragonslayer has all of the elements of a classic, duty, honor, courage, love, treachery and action. I would not recommend this for young viewers.
There are no gratuitous sex scenes, but there is a female full frontal nudity shot. It is done in good taste and actually does fit into the movie. There is also a scene where you do get to see the dragon burn some people alive. These two scenes may not be appropriate for kids.
The movie has a couple of semi-famous actors but all do an excellent job on their parts. The movie does drag a little while it is trying to build the character’s backgrounds and is the reason I gave it a “good” rating instead of “excellent”.
The dragon scenes themselves are fairly impressive since it does not appear that the main dragon parts didn’t use CAD (computer animated drawing). There is a nice battle in the dragon’s lair with the dragon slayer.
If you like Action/Adventure/Fantasy movies you will enjoy this classic.

  Great Medieval Dragon Flick

I'm a Medieval history buff and a big fan of Dungeons & Dragon's, so it is rare to find a fantasy movie that mixes both. Dragonslayer is one of my old favorites as the movie not only does a fantastic job on special effects with the Dragon, but also portrays life in medieval times pretty accurately. The actors were well chosen and I believe that Dragonslayer was the best movie of its kind before the release of the Lord of the Rings and other more modern films

  Not your avrage Dragon Movie
Review created: 09/11/09

I am not a Sword and dragon kind of movie person. But then this is not your average Sword and Dragon movie. For those that are looking for a Dragon movie it may not be your cup of tea. There is a historical realism to this movie that has nothing to do with Dragons. The acting is mixed, some good some not so good. Our hero being the worst of the actors, while the villain, (Not the dragon) surprised me. The graphics are not that great, but the story really holds it all together. This is not a five star movie, but for an afternoon just to relax and enjoy, you can't go wrong. This is one goes with other movies like. "The Bride, Fire Walker. Monster Squad, Legend and the Last Starfighter." Not great movies, but fun movies, regardless of your age. And, sometimes you just got to have a little fun.

  Dragonslayer DVD
Review created: 06/02/09

I bought this DVD to replace our old VHS version. The movie is well worth having in your home video library for several reasons. For us, it is a family type movie and is good value for your entertainment dollars. As a fantasy buff, I like this movie because it's low-key, fantasy, not alot of CGI and the direction is good. The story flows and the movie moves along. The ending is happy and as for light entertainment, I would recommend it. As a fan of movies that are more actor and less props, this movie does well, especially since it was a low-budget affair -but quite well done.
In any case, it was worth it to me to replace my old copy - and when the DVD arrived, we watched it that evening. Thumbs up!

  Exactly what I expected!
Review created: 03/14/09

I remember Dragonslayer when it came out in 1981, and although critics didn't like it, I did, and I still do! It is exactly what I expected it to be. It isn't Caitlin Clark or Peter McNichol's best work, but they brought to life the experience and the magic of this ageless story of dragons, sorcerers, and a subtle love connection between the hero and heroine. I'm glad it is out there for true fans and for future generations to enjoy!

I remember seeing this as a kid in the theatre and it is as good as I remember on the home theatre probably the best of the genre from the time period. I recommend Sword and the Sorceror as well as this title.

If you like medieval stories, you'll enjoy this film.

The story itself is enjoyable. Matthew Broderick is excellent, one of his earliest films showing great skills as an actor. The Merlin-like character is forceful and believable (for a fantasy story with dragons, that is!). There is a touch of comedy in the script, and the music is interesting in light of its connection to subject matter. Overall, I find this a worthwhile film to see and recommend you purchase it for yourself and your family (kids under 10 or so might get a little spooked, but maybe not, depending on what they're used to).

  Dragon Slayer
Review created: 02/05/09

I remembered seeing it at a younger age and remembered it quite fondly. I still enjoyed it, but it seems no longer an oasis in a desert without enough fantasy (Lord of the Rings and derivatives corrected that), so it was less overwhelming in its need. Still, the characters remained great, and the conflict between the humans as to whether to kill the dragon or sacrifice to it seems like a great parable to something.
There is a scene that needs to be censored for American kids (It is my theory that since movie violence is fake, even if ketchup seems to be gory, it is okay for kids), since it does contain nudity. The DVD I purchased was without any bells or whistles of special features, so one should ask the seller about that if one cares about that.
It is definitely worth getting if only to see what one can do without CGI effects(only two scenes caused a Land of the Lost flashback).

  Dragonslayer DVD

I decided to buy this particular DVD as a gift for my son for Christmas. It was one of his favorites as a child.
The special effects are amazing, especially given the date it was made.
The story line is fantastic for any SciFi fan.
The dragons are well seen not like many of these types of movies where you get only a glimpse of a wing or see a partial head.
You get see a full frontal of the dragon and her ability to breathe fire.
The action starts immediately, and goes right through to the end.
There is a moral to this story as there are to so many of them.
The actors are very well versed and you feel like this is really taking place.
All in all this is a great movie and I highly recommend it.
