This is Todd McCaffrey's second collaboration with his mother on a Pern book. "Dragon's Fire" follows Todd McCaffrey's "Dragon's Blood" and Anne McCaffrey's book with Todd, "Dragon's Kin."

I had a hard time getting into this book for the first few chapters because the link to the end of "Dragon's Kin" wasn't obvious. I guess I needed a refresher course in all the character names, or to quickly skim over the ending of "Dragon's Kin" before beginning this one.

However, once I got over that hurdle, this is an excellent addition to the Pern world. It begins by examining the problem of the Shunned - outcasts who move like gypsies. They've been for various reasons thrown out of holds and halls, and now steal, beg and hide from the general populace.

A mute boy named Pellar helps the harpers figure out what to do about the situation.

The writing in this is much more even and the dialogue much more believable than the previous two books, where I felt like Todd McCaffrey was just learning to write and write well. I find his writing much improved and look forward to reading his next efforts.

I love the Pern series. It is my favorite sentient dragon-human series. The great thing about this series is that it doesn't have to be read in sequence and each book can be read as a stand-alone book. Humans tired of war and technogly colonize a planet unknowing of it's major danger - a sister planet that throws mycoziod flesh and plant eating thread every 200 years or so. In this book the pass of the "Red Star" is about 20 years away and Pern is preparing once agian to battle thread with sentient dragons and ground crews. They have not yet lost the knowledge of immigration as in some of the previous but occuring later books have. This book is mainly about the Shunned. There is no capitol punishment on Pern and criminals are marked with a big S on the forehead and are outcasts having supposedly but in reality some contact with the Pernese. In this novel the Harpers who are the teachers, rule setters, artist, musicians and overall overseers of Pern life are busy counting the Shunned and learning how many there are in light of protecting them or protecting the people of Pern from the Shunned when tread starts falling. You will throughly enjoy one or more of the almost 20 books in this series. The thing I find most unusual is that all crafts and occupations are represented in Pern society, but there is no religion.

Todd McCaffrey has showcased his talent yet again in this fine book. The depth of character, enchantment and wonder of the Pern series is back and the transition from Anne to Todd is completed seamlessly in this book. I can't wait for the next one!

I decided to get it because I am a big fan of the Dragons of Pern. I have read most of them and love them. I had not read any of the son's writings but very much enjoyed this one.
