Having religiously played the Xbox Live demo every day for most of the past few weeks, I was counting down the hours until I could get my hands on the full version of Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit.

Now, I’m not exactly a fan of Dragon Ball, having only previously had a passing interest in the adventures of Goku and friends. Having said that, playing the demo actually made me want to discover more about the DBZ universe - and how many games can you say that about? Plus, the demo was just so much pure fun!

So, did the full game live up to my lofty expectations? Was I rewarded for all of those endless replays of the demo?

Excitement coursing though my being, I eagerly slammed the game disk into the old 360 and set about finding out.

Once I got past all of the tutorials - took about ten minutes - I first made the mistake of trying out the Trial Survival mode. Highly addictive, I managed to got past 25 opponents before time ran out during a battle with Bardock. Bah. Still, it was a nice introduction to the proper game.

On then to the basics.

The various modes on offer are Z Chronicle (the main mode where you unlock stuff), Versus (player-on-player fun, either in the same room, or over Xbox Live), Trial (Survival mode, which unlocks Time Attack Mode and Battle Point Mode), Tutorial (do I really need to explain this one?), and Training (where you can pick how you opponent reacts to your attacks, including Offensive and Defensive behaviour).

The first thing you notice about the game are the stunning visuals, a fantastic display of cel-shading finished off with the occasional flash of motion blur. At points, it's like watching an interactive cartoon. Ah, if only there was more of it. Slim re-telling of the core storylines simply isn’t enough to immerse you fully into the action - but more of that in a moment.

This is a fighting game that is easy to pick up and play. There’s some depth there if you want it, but many hardcore fighters should look elsewhere if they want a true hardcore fighting experience. Still, there’s a wide variety of attacks such as the standard rush and smash versions, grabs, and Ki blasts. Aura actions kick in with a transformation (giving you the Aura Spark which allows for quick teleportation) and Super and Ultimate attacks round out your arsenal. I think DBZ fans will approve.

The thing that really appeals to me about Burst Limit is that it’s so satisfying when you pull of the really big moves. I can’t help but grin every time I end a fight with an Ultimate K.O.

Another great moment comes when you enter into "frenzied battle mode": Trigger it at the right moment, and you launch into a dizzying display of fast and furious button bashing as you and your opponent zip all over the place, feverishly trying to block each other's moves. Fantastic stuff!

A few last notes about combat. Super Saiyan unlocks more powerful basic attacks, and a few bigger moves - the downside here is that you suffer from a lower defence. Alternatively, activating your Aura Spark boosts defence and turns normal moves into super moves - however, you only get a limited amount of time to pull these big moves off.

Oh, and counters and dodges can also be pulled off, as long as you get your timing right.

Back to the player modes then, and the main single-player game is Z Chronicles, where you start out with a pre-set character and opponent, and play through the sadly slight story line of the game.

Once you've beaten an opponent, you’re rewarded wi

More of the same is not so bad

Burst limit is another in the long line of DBZ titles, but that's not so bad.
This game returns to a play style similar to the Budokia series(more side, less behind the head). The command style mimics the psp DBZ title which is not a bad thing. The only complaint I'd have with the game is that you have to choose your
Special attack at the beginning of the match and the story only goes to the Cell Saga(but I'm sure that's so they can sell sequels).

Overall definitely worth getting, just maybe not at full price.

If you liked all of the other DBZ fighting games, then you'll enjoy this one. it follows a similar formula to budokai 3 and shin budokai for PSP. Overall I really enjoyed it and it's an excellent addition to anyones PS3 library.

  Great two-player game...mediocre single-player
Review created: 10/23/08

Graphics are great. The cell shading looks really good on normal TVs, HDTVs, and 1080p-capable monitors alike. Game runs really smooth, typical of the easy-to-process cell shading graphics.

Music is good and fits the theme of the game, but it's repetitive. That being said, if you're focusing on the music while you should be avoiding that Instant Transmission Super Kamehameha coming at you, you're playing the wrong game. I won't dock it for that.

The story is good, not great. The game progresses through the end of the Cell saga and through the movie featuring Broly. They probably could have fit the Buu saga as well (not like the Blu-Ray disc can't hold it :D), but due to the repetitive nature of the game it probably wouldn't have added much. We would have gotten the different Buu forms and the Fusions, plus Adult Gohan. The awesomeness of those would probably be offset by the fact that we would have had to play more singleplayer to get them...as I'll explain in just a second.

Gameplay is a mixed bag. The characters more or less play the same, but some are faster and have more reach than the others (Krillin for example is lightning-fast, but Piccolo can hit from further away). Because each character has the same normal moves, and the same way to pull off specials and ultimates, if you've seen one you've pretty much seen 'em all. This is where you start to lose interest in the CPU VERY quickly. If you don't have friends that can come play this, or you can't get on the Internet to play, you'll probably be disappointed with the game. After a few minutes of playing against the CPU I get bored and go do something else. I believe the "burst limit" refers to the amount of time you can spend playing the game in one sitting.

To really get the most out of the game, play it with friends. If alcohol is involved, even better. Burst Limit falls under the category of "bright lights and shiny objects" for sure. It's easy to play while inebriated because the moves are pretty much a direction and a button.

That being said, it is possible to pull off some pretty cool combos with the right timing. I guess this game is a little like WoW in that it's pretty easy to get OK but can be hard to get good.

Like many games, the replay value of the game comes from the multiplayer. Once you've gone through the single player mode to unlock all the characters, transformations, drama scenes, and stages the single player part of the game is basically done. The rest of the fun comes from playing other people...the AI in the game will only take you so far.

All in all, the game is good...with friends (enemies?). If you want to play single-player, rent don't buy. You'll finish single-player in maybe an hour to an hour and a half. But, if you like having friends over to play games, go ahead and pick it up.

This is a high quality game. I loved it. My Boyfriend and I love the DBZ games but this one is the best yet. The graphics are amazing and you can pretty much fight anyway you like! There are also a lot more characters to fight and you can play it online! I give it 5 stars!

If you are not a fan of the DBZ series this game is gonna be kinda hard to get into. The campaign throws you into the story of DBZ with no background or preparation. But if you don't care about the story and just want an easy to pick up fighting game or you're a long time fan of the DBZ series you, will end up liking this game a lot. Rent it and try it out for a couple days before buying.

If you are a DBZ fan this game will entertain you. However it is Very short and Is over in just a couple sittings. This game only goes to the cell saga which is a bummer but some extra characters do make their way into the end. I would recommend this for anyone who is a fan of the series or games. But don't get your expectations too high.
