Two of Universal Horror's Best

Actually, there has never been an American studio which done horror better than Universal. Afterall, this is the studio which gave us the original Frankenstien, Dracula, The Mummy, just to mention a few. All of Universal's offerings are big on atmosphere, story line and the cimenatography is peerless. Daughter of Dracula and in particular Son of Dracula are no exceptions. Daughter of Dracula is a classic Universal outing, with Edward Von Sloan reprising his role as Professor Von Helssing and even though you never see her take a bite, Gloria Holden's portrayal of the old neck biter's daughter is at once sympathetic and chilling.
I have always said that Lon Chaney Jr. is one of the most underrated and typecast horror actors ever, which is a shame. Known for his singular role as the Wolfman, Chaney proves that he can make one convincing Count Dracula in Son of Dracula. His play on the role is better than that of John Carridine who played the role in House of Dracula. As a matter of fact, Chaney is one of the best Draculas ever, on par with Lugosi and Lee. And the movie! The effects are excellent, the story, set in the bayous of the South, is gripping and the acting is great. Again, the Universal cinemagraphic touch is ever present, setting an eerie mood for an eerie tale.
There is nothing that matches Black and White horror films. And there is nothing that matches a Universal Black and White horror film. These two offerings, Daughter of Dracula and Son of Dracula are must haves for any serious horror movie fan. A well shot, well woven tale and great acting are what you can always expect from Universal. Check these two out. I'm sure you'll agree.
